My Confusion with symbols and the file structure

Hi, I just can’t seem to figure out the cataloging on the symbols. I have the November annual with the new art and annual 64. I start a map following the PDF instructions for the annual 64. I create the land mass, the mountain background and the rivers with no problem. At this point in the symbol view window I see the new all of the mountains and hills from the 64 annual. Per the instructions I then click on the Structures catalog and I see only line art in the viewer window. I click on the “Symbol Catalog Setting” icon at the top of the screen next to the “Borders/Political” icon and I see Select Catalog setting – Available symbol catalogs and then a listing CC2 Line All, CC2 Line borders…
So then I click on the symbol style toggle icon 5 times and it shows the “Symbol Catalog Setting” with the following CC# Filled Vegetation, CC3B vegetation and CC#C vegetation, click on the same icon 2 more times and I get the same box with the CC2 monochrome vegetation listings.
SO long story short how do I set this so I can see the new symbols that are in these 2 annuals and is there any way that I can stream line this confusing symbol structure so that I can place all the symbols that I like into a folder structure on my drive that I can constantly get to?
Thanks,
Ken

Ok So I made a little progress on this, maybe...
If I click on the Icon with the three stacked boxes and the folder, navigate to the annual 64 folder and select the CA64All.fsc file I can now see all of the symbols in the annual but now none of the preset icons (Borders, mountians, vegetation ect) hold any data and the browse button under advances doesn't do anything. I feel like I'm spending more time fighting more with how to get the program set up, than I am mapping. So any streamlining help, even if it is not as efficient a process for an expert user, would helpful.

I just about always use the navigation method you describe rather than the icons. Having found the right folder everything is then plain sailing. For mountains you open mountains.fsc, vegetation you open vegetation.fsc, and so on. My poor old brain can cope with that.

Ok it takes two clicks instead of one, but I find this a lot easier than having to guess what all those little pictures stand for and then pick the right one :)

I never, ever go anywhere near the catalogue search stuff - that way madness lies.

You'll find most everything else works just fine though, once you get the hang of it.

  • Yep, like pdj said.

Took me a few trial and error but you will get the hang of it in no time.
Once you get used to the file structure you will find the symbols easy enough.

And the annual 64 symbols are in cc3/symbols/maps/Herwin Wielink

No idea who thought up cc3's file structure but it could have been done better in my opinion.

Well I'm glad I'm not alone in this. But there has to be a better way to keep this all organized, with 71 and counting annuals, each having their own symbol set, it seems like it will be a mess.

This happens because the master filter has not been correctly loaded/set.

    - Right click the symbol style toggle button, select Master Filter Settings
    - Click Load, and select CA64 from the new popup, and click the load button in this dialog to load this setting
    - Finally, back in the master filter dialog, make sure the CA64 filter is the one selected, and click OK.

After doing this, the catalog buttons should work as expected.

Thanks Monsen, I'll give that a try.

Well I tried your directions Monsen and they didn't work. When I hit the load button I only saw some very basic styles in the box.
I did a repair of CC3 and reinstalled both 64 and 71(As admin), now I can see the symbols in the filters buttons from 64 but not any of the new symbols from 71.So I guess that is progress.

If I go to the folders (symbols/maps/Herwin Wielink/structures) I can see the PNG but when I am in CC3 I only have the ones from 64. So my 3 spare hours this week I've had to map have been wasted again and I'm getting depressed. If anybody has any suggestions I'm open to them. Thanks

There are no filters or seperate symbol catalogs for annual 71. This is because the symbol catalogs are integrated into the one from the 64 annual. If it weren't so, you would constantly need to click the change style button, which is not very helpful since issue 64 and 71 is basically just one style.
You can easily see if issue 71 is installed and working properly by clicking on the Borders/Political symbol catalog button (Assuming you are in a HW map, and your master filter is set correctly so the buttons work [This should normally be set automatically however]). If you only have issue 64, nothing appears here, but if you have issue 71, there should be a handful of symbols here.

That is excatly the case, I have nothing in the borders/political presets and the others only have from issue 64. I can see the png files but it is like they are not in the FSC. I even deleted the FSC files in the symbol folder and redownloaded the annual 71 and loaded that as an admin. Same thing, but I have found a work around as I hit the file folder and go into the specific symbol folder for the new symbols I can see them and load them up. Extra steps but I guess it will have to do.
Monsen thank you for you help

The workaround you describe works, but it uses the raw .png files, so you miss all the various symbol settings when doing it this way.

If the png's are in the folder, it is a clear indication that you actually installed Annual 71. Failure to overwrite the Ca64 symbol catalogs with the updated versions might happen if you forgot to to do the right click -> run as admin on the annual installers, but if you are sure you did that on both of them, i am unsure what might have happened here.
What you may wish to check is if the C:\Users\YOUR_USER_NAME\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\ProFantasy\CC3\Symbols\Maps\Herwin Wielink (Path might be slighly different on your computer, since this mirrors the actual CC3 installation path) folder exists and contain any files. If it does, it means that the windows 7 shadow folders have struck again, and that it might incorrectly merge these files with the files in the CC3 installation directory. If you do have files here, it means that you have run the installer without selecting "as admin" at least once. You can try deleting the files here and see if that makes a difference.

If this doesn't help, you should consider contacting ProFantasy technical support over this, see if they can help you.

So I finally fixed this, I uninstalled everything. Then I found that the uninstall did not delete all of the directories so I manually deleted those. I attempted to reinstall CC3 from a download and it kept crashing at the ELOA screen, I found the fix to that in the support section and deleted all the markers on the Registry. I was then able to reload as an admin CC3, DD3, CD3 and all of the annuals and when I got done I could actually see the borders/political symbols.
    Thanks again Monsen
