Just wanted to say thanks for putting this out (for those that haven't seen it, there's a link to it in the last blog entry). Its definitely worth reading.
Now, if I could just find a similar guide for placing mountains and sculpting deserts I might be able to start an overland map for my Al-Qadim campaign....

Lately, I've been looking at real world maps of the Gobi desert (Mongolia) and Danakil desert (Ethiopia) for inspiration.
