Editing Objects in 3-D Starmap

Folks, how do I edit an object in the 3-D star map?

For example, if I decide I later want to change the size of a star, where can I adjust that? Or what about the text size associated with a star? Can I adjust that?

Also, can I trim the map if it's too big? Or export a section?

  • You can simply select the Property tool, then select the object... is that what you're asking for?

You need to do the same for the text associated to it.

Regarding the last question, I'd say the easiest is to export the full map and then cut it using The Gimp or another image editing tool.

Trimming a map is basically done by deleting the existing map border, draw a new one encompassing the section you need, and then delete all the entities outside the map border. The trim, trim to intersection, break and cut commands are you friends here.
To export a section of a map, simply select "rectangular selection PNG" from the save as dialog. Once you click save, CC3 will ask you to define two opposite corner in the rectangle that outlines the section you wish to export.

Changing the size of a star is done through the scale command (found in the left hand toolbar set). To change the size of text, use the numeric edit command on it, and in the dialog, hit properties and set the new size.
  • Hi Vorkosigan, I cant seem to select a Star. If I draw a line on my star map, Im able to select and edit it, but not my stars.

I don't see anything that says locked....so Im not sure why I cant edit the stars....
  • Monsen, thanks for the heads up on the trim, I'll try that!
  • Ok, so I can select a Star if I choose CHANGE PROPERTIES verses EDIT PROPERTIES, but it always selects 2 objects (I assume the star and it's base, showing the Z coordinate).

But when I click DO IT - I dont see any item that corresponds to the star's scale like 1.0, 2.0 etc..
  • Monsen, I saw your mention of scale, I'll see if I can find some directions on how to use that in the documentation. Thanks.
  • Ok, got it. I can scale them.

Now next question for you pros :)

How do I change the Z dimension? The value above or below the plane? Is that possible to edit?

Because the way the symbols are created, I would recommend simply placing a new symbol instead. The alternative is to use the move (move, scale, rotate) command to move the star and/or the base symbol up and down, and then use node edit to move the end position of the connecting line.
