Just a texture - and a riddle

On a whim I created this tiling texture by scanning a very common item at 1200dpi (and then making it tile seamlessly in Photoshop).

Anyone wanna guess what the item may have been?

And of course it's free to use for anyone as a texture.

The item in question is made out of cork, that's correct, but the color is odd, isn't it?

The candidate has 100 points. Yep, red wine cork, the underside that's soaked with wine. If anyone's curious, a 2009 Cour du Roy (Bordeaux) - very tasty. And no, I'm not drunk.
