Symbols Project Update: More New Stuff In The Works!!!

Hi children.

Well - I am still hammering away at this project - and my hopes are that eventually, you shall reap the benefits. I am doing these with both artistic mappers and gamers / GMs in mind. My goal is to make an incredibly comprehensive series of catalogues / collections that will be fully functional in a game environment. True - these aren't going to be as portrait perfect and flashy as the other symbol sets that so many other more talented graphics wizards have been putting on the table as of late - but - they'll work (whatever that means, lol :) ).

First - here's an image of the complete set of Chromatic Dragon symbol images that I have just completed + two more dragon types. I am also working on a Dragon Turtle symbol image not shown here (P.S., I did NOT do a Tiamut symbol image - because Tiamut is too D&D specific really - and besides - she's more of a demi-diety than a monster type technically speaking [ from what I understand]):

  • Next - I have been working on new map pointer sets:

And finally - some additional spiders meant to overlay over my web symbols on your maps, I may do a few different types of spiders other than the tarantula looking fare here - to give you more variety to work with.:

As you can see - I have been busy - and work commences onward...
  • Very nice aditions. Do you have a release date? How much are you thinking on charging for them?
  • Very nice indeed.

    Your hard work is appriciated.

No release date yet because - unbelievably - I still have quite a ways to go on this. When the project is finished - ALL of these catalogues will be completely free to all CC3 users, or, they might get into an Annual (in which case they will still be available nonetheless).

I am thinking that Many of the original hi resolution images themselves may or may not be sold as clip art or some other medium much later on if I decide to (like - I don't know - stickers, T-shirts, Coffee mugs, Ball Caps, - who knows at this point - your guess is as good as mine) - but the CC3 map symbol versions of these images will be free of charge (or maybe in an Annual(s)) - and royalty free for all commercial and non commercial maps.

The only limitation to how you use them will be that the individual images themselves can not be re-distributed or sold as clip art or commercial stock design elements. Much like the Terraformer materials - Profantasy Software would be able to use these images promotionally however if they somehow hosted the package - and because I also want to promote the continued existance of their products.

    Thank you Mateus and Henrie.
  • As a footnote - when I finish the core symbol sets (Terrains, Trees, Towns, Cities, Mountains, etc.), then I will post a projected release date.
  • One question. Is not easier to make the symbols varicolour them to put diferent colours of the same symbol?
  • Very nice! Your first symbols were great, and each successive batch just gets better.

    Thanks for doing this.

And I second the suggestion/call that you look at making the symbols varicolor. It would mean that we have lots of options to customize.

Yes - some of the symbols will be varicolor if I can help it. The pointers and map markers mostly - as well as perhaps some of the crop symbols. After all of the symbols are drawn out - I might try to get some help on these as far as scaling them, and doing varicolor to hasten and streamline the process a bit - since those aspects are the ones that I'm going to be brain straining the most on.

    Thank you amigo.

What would be cool really is if somebody more familiar with the fantasy RPG world than I am had some editorial authority to where they could go over all of these symbol images and say "Like it...Like it....Hate it...This one sucks...This one is "so so"... This one is ok...etc.,etc.,etc.,. Lol :)
  • But even if someone did rate them as keepers & not, why wouldn't you make them all available? You've done the work already, and someone is bound to use each symbol.

I suppose if you want to drive yourself crazy, you could set up umpteen polls and get everyone's opinions; but I can tell you in advance they are going to be all over the map and you're going to end up trusting your gut instinct anyway.

You're doing a huge favor to the community, so keep doing what's fun.

The only symbols that I am not in love are the humanoids ones (probably the most dificult to come with). All the others are simply amazing in my opinion. I would prefer the "object symbols" (swords, barrels...) to be more linear, but you are the artist and not me.

Thank you for all the work.
  • Your welcome Mat, I've been thinking about doing more racial icons (Dwarves, Elves, Humans, Orcs, Etc.), I think the linear issue may be an effect of the type of pens that I'm using (Gels - which do have a tendency to bleed / soak from time to time), and the scanner settings. Also - I use to do editorial cartoons more my college newspaper way back in the day, and that's a drawing style that still comes through from time to time when I'm drawing fine line with pens as opposed to pencil sketching and stuff.
  • Man, I NEED these symbols to use on the heraldic shields of my fantasy world =). I cant wait he release!
  • Yeah, publish. We await the date of the publishing.

Ok guys, I can't commit to a date until I do the core stuff (Standard CC3 symbol fare), but I will do my best not to disappoint, and when this is done - if I'm reading the feedback correctly - you guys should like the results (I hope, lol).

There's still a lot I want to add in to this. Thinking of doing a few more dragons, some classic Giant types, and expanding a few sets with just a few more variations. I definitely want to add in more web and spider varieties, and more standard animal icons. I'm adding batches to this collection every week, and burning various project iterations on multiple disks..It won't finish it this week -but I don't see it taking me a year either, lol. It will get done eventually.

Just finished a nifty Chimera Symbol image, tried to stay as true to the old AD&D Monster Manual Vol I description as possible for my own taste. Note the low but bold level of both detail and shading - and the use of uniform not textured colors - this is to make the symbol (s) stand out when I apply the transparency - and when it is positioned on a CC3 Map sheet that may have a textured or multitonal fill pattern..:
  • Here is a list of symbol catalogues that will be in the package:

#1, Standard Terrain And Vegetation, [ SOME VARICOLOR ],
#2, Standard Towns, Cities, Ruins, etc.), [ SOME VARICOLOR ],

#3, Crops (indicates locations of certain raw foods, herbs, etc.), [ SOME VARICOLOR ],

    #4, Gem Mines,

    #5, Ore Mines,

#4, Resources (Dining, Money / Tresure, Magical Items, Books, Scrolls, Stone, Clay, Coal, Oil, Water, Weapons Cache, Food Fishes, Pearls, Game Animals, etc.),

#5, Creatures & Critters (Monsters And Entities - basic classic types from old school gaming / Vol1 D&D / AD&D stuff and Earlier - with a smidgeon of mythological, historical, and Original creepy crawlies and monsters), [ SOME VARICOLOR ],

#6, Numbers And Letter Map Marker Sets,

#7, Miscellanious Map Markers, Pointers, & Indicators. including maybe a few scale bars and compasses [ SOME VARICOLOR ].

All map symbols are / will be hand drawn.
  • When this is done, please, let know how to compensate you. Its a huge work and you nedd some financial back for it.

Are you kidding my brother - this is as fun as a theme park to me! Lol. - no compensation will be required, or necessary for these CC3 Cats, you may have to get them from an annual though if I can develope some fill styles to go with them - or if Profantasy wants to stick them in there.

HOWEVER - should you want any of the original FULL RESOLUTION images for anything other than making maps - like making up some T-Shirts or ball caps, getting coffee mugs printed up, decal sets for automobiles, boats, whatever - that would be COMMERCIAL "for sale" items - then you'll have to give me some time to set up a fresh paypal account (but It'll probably still be dirt cheap anyway, since I'm not really that good, lol :) )

By the way - any commercial / for sale maps that you would make using CC3 and these catalogues - will be ok to sell or to do with however you like free of license fee or royalties, I was referring to everything under the sun BUT maps, lol.

If you - however - want a dozen different images or so to print up some sticker sheets at Kinkos to give to your kids - or you like a particular one - and you want it for a single personal T-shirt to have a T-Shirt place silkscreen it up for you - or you want to print it onto an iron on transfer sheet - well then - as long as I know you from this forum - I'll probably send you a zip. I would like to have a pic of the shirt though to see how it turned out, lol.

Just add a 'donate' button on the website you post them on -- even if you just get a few bucks from the grateful, it will pay for new pens or web hosting or something. Setting up those buttons is really easy from Paypal or Amazon (or maybe both -- a quick web search should find it for you)

I was actually wanting to get a website with light boxes that have "add to cart" options to sell my 3d model work through - as well as my non-RPG / gaming related general use and pin up clip art, and my stuff like Bryce materials and various software add-ons and junk, but I would like to be able to do that through PAYPAL because it IS a lot easier than going through companies like Visa / Master Card ecommerce and such. That's something that I'll mull over in a little more detail when I'm ready to I guess.

Pens - you brought up a good point. I generally use uniball gel pens - and they are great - but they dry up super fast. I've been buying about six of those at Walmart once a week lately.

Actually I do have a thought - if you guys could give me some ideas on what kind of fill patterns would look good with these symbols, and how many fills I would really need to make to cover the basics - that would be cool. Should I use solid colors or what?
