Autosave is Fubar

This feature has lost me HOURS of work. AUTOSAVE.FCW is nowhere on my computer. Like, uh, where is this CC3 file going??

Comments

  • With me its right inside my CC3 folder. C:\CC3

    But don't depend on autosave.
When working on big maps I manually save every few minutes.

And it doesn't hurt either before making big changes to do an extra save.
At these points I usually save with an extra extension so I can always go back and retry.
  • Yup. save as filename01, filename02, etc. I have found that to be a life saver. And if I decide about version 150 that I don't like the way the map is turning out, I can go back and look at al of the previous maps and branch off in a new direction. This takes care of issues that go back further than undo can handle.
  • I wouldn't say it's FUBAR, perhaps SNAFU or at worst TARFU, but it is not beyond all repair.

Also note that due to the fact that there is only one autosave file, you should never depend on it for regular saving. For example, I frequently keep more than one CC3 windows open, which means that they all save to the same file, so I never know exactly what the autosave file contains. It can be of great help in disaster recovery if the disaster strikes, but never depend on it.

Also note that while CC3 does store it in the CC3 installation directory, because of the way Windows 7 (and Vista) handles stuff inside the program files directory, you can easily encounter the situation where you cannot find the file when browsing with Windows Explorer (or any other file manager), but it will be there when you select Open in CC3 and browse to that location.

I worked on a map for nearly an hour. Autosave was aktivated with Autosave all 5 minutes option.
Then FCW32 crashed -- as often. I tried to find the Autosave.fcw file without any success.

There is no autosave.fcw file on my computer and I do not know why.
(This is confusing because it should exists such a file in every case).
Also the CC3 help does not give any information where the autosave file is usually stored.

It should be simple to modify the autosave function that each open filename.fcw file is saved every X minutes in the original folder with a filename filename_autosave.fcw.

    With best regards
    Robak

The autosave.fcw file is stored in the CC3 installation directory. If there is no autosave file there (and you are sure autosave was turned on), it is usually because either:
    - You do not have the right to write a file here, so the save failed.
    - Vista/7 prevented changes to the program files directory by placing the file in a virtual store (This can happen if CC3 is installed inside one of the program files directories, even if you have the permissions tow rtie files here). If windows did this, it is very difficult to find the file using windows explorer (or any other file manager), since it won't show up when you browse CC3's directory, but you should find it if you start CC3 and use File--> Open and browse to the file this way.

I do agree with you that it would have been nice with multiple autosave files and a configurable location though.
  • It might have saved in your C:\Users\username\documents folder.

Here is the virtual folder Windows 7 uses sometimes:
    "C:\Users\YourUserName\AppDate\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\ProFantasy\CC3"
If CC3 doesn't have proper administrative access, your Autosave will be located here.

To circumvent WIndows 7 doing this, run CC3 "as administrator". To do so:
    - right-click the CC3 shortcut
    - choose "Properties" and go the "Compatibility" tab
    - check the "Always run as Administrator" box.

You'll have to confirm you want to run as administrator each time you run CC3, but it will now have full access to anything in its program folder.

    Hope that helps.

  • OK talking of Autosave, how do you stop being asked every 5 minutes if you want to autosave? I do want t0 autosave, but I don't want to be asked all the time :(
  • I do a 'save as' when I feel it is necessary. I haver autosave off on my cc3.

    Menu > File > Autosave

There you can disable it (uncheck, promt before saving).

    But I don't use autosave.
    Its better to save manually.
When I make "important" changes to a map I save it first under another name (like a001, a002 ect...).
Then If anything goes wrong I can go back to the previous version.

I highly recommend to leave Autosave on, you can always do your manual saving in addition to it. It has saved maps for me very often.

As Henrie61 says, uncheck the "Prompt before saving" in File > Autosave and CC3 will just silently save in the background, without asking.
