Al-Qadim ("Nine Flawed Sapphires")

This is a map derived from the "Nine Flawed Sapphires" adventure provided in the "A Dozen and One Adventures" Sourcebook (by Steven Kurtz). I tried to remain true to the original but made several modifications. The story is that this complex is serves as a warehouse/production center/hideout for someone who is illegally distributing wine (alcohol is illegal in the Al-Qadim world). The hideout is hidden behind "Sakina Falls" and can be accessed by uttering the magic words which shift the waterfall to the left. The entire place is magically illuminated (hence the reason why you will find no torches).

Made with CC3 - Most objects can be found in the CSUAC or on the Dunjinni Forums - Special recognition for Bogie's waterfall objects which can be found here... http://www.dundjinni.com/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=13273&PN=0&TPN=2

Here's an attempt to do the surrounding area. Because the players won't know the magic words to make the waterfall move (and reveal the entrance to the complex), they will likely need to wait it out and ambush someone as they leave. So, thought I would create a large encounter map to facilitate that process. I just started working on it tonight - so plenty more left to do, but pretty happy with it so far. Comments, Criticisms, and Suggestions are always welcomed.

*Forgot to mention....the PCs will be coming from the north west and whoever exits the complex has to take the path towards the northwest. Waterfall drops at least 100 feet, but haven't decided on the cliff height yet (thinking maybe 10 or 15 feet - easy enough for them to climb and ambush from above if they so choose.)

Excellent work on the different levels and effects to make them stand out.
  • Freakin sweet and tastey!!!

These maps rock! I've GOT to look into those resources. The subterranean waterfall and cliff path are awsome. I think that after I do my fantasy overland symbols project - I might take a crack at dungeon stuff. This is inspiring!!!
  • Thanks guys. Here is the finished product (I think)...Pretty happy with it, but making it was a giant pain in the a**.

The waterfall was a million little overlapped symbols yanked from a forum all on different sheets with shadows. The path consists of several sheets of varying transparency to give it a ramped-up effect. And because I couldn't put the river sheet on top of everything else, I had to make a bunch of different grid sheets (and a new hatch fill) to make it cover everything but the river (Not sure if the grid thing was even worth it.)

...Enough bitching - it was still fun to do and I picked up some new CC3 tricks along the way (I also learned that I need a faster computer if I want to have this many sheets/objects/effects). Hope I get to actually DM this adventure at some point soon.
  • Great looking map.
Certainly worth all the hard work.

Now just hope the players don't spend only 5 minutes here and the decide to do something different, happened to me :-)
