I decided to do a desert scene.

large drawing first.

cheetah and troll upper left, right side of road are merchants, tents, a small pond.

I rarely use them... some folks would like me to try them. Any suggestions ?

Yeah, sheet effects are what really make the maps pop. To start - I would advocate adding a drop shadow effect to all of your symbols (varying dimensions depending on how high off the ground they are). Perhaps an edge-fade-inner to the pond to give it the appearance of going from shallow to deep.

In general - I would just say start playing around with stuff to get to know what the possibilities are. I'm sure you wont regret it.

drop shadow on symbols: x offset 3, y offset 6, opacity 30 percent, blur radius 5.

pond: edge fade, inner: edge width 8, inner opacity 100, outer opacity zero.

Iarea near pond. I had to tone down the drop shadow significantly, the shadows were so dark and obvious... to my eyes it looked like the symbols were floating about a meter about ground.
