What am I doing/ have done wrong?

I am nearly done with the major portion of the work on my Imagi-Nation campaign map. However, when I save it as a png/jpeg, I lose the detail when I zoom in.
Well, Malcom McCallum used CC2/3 (as far as I have been able to determine) and got his map to "zoom" as found here: http://www.murat.ca/maps/bwlowcountries.jpg
What do I need to do to achieve the same result? This is rather frustrating.

Can you suggest which settings will allow me to zoom this in?
Edit: Oh, and if someone could teach me how to make this thing a thumbnail it would be nice
Edit 2: Rezized the to be smaller
I will experiment with it, using your own numbers as a baseline.
<a href="http://example.com/largeimage.jpg"><img src="http://example.com/thumbnailimage.jpg"></a>
Or you can upload the thumbnail image to the forum (The large image still need to be hosted somewhere else). To link it to the large image, you must first post it as an attachment, then you will need to go back and edit your post. When you do that, you can see the attachment-id of your uploaded image (This is a 4-5 digit number), and then you can create a link around your attachment with the following code:
<a href="http://example.com/largeimage.jpg">[Image_0000]</a>
(Replace 0000 with the actual ID)
Not that both these options require that you have selected Html as your comment format when posting it.
I just assumed that the forum had some nifty thumbnail code or something
