Text justify. Why?

Hi all.

I've been quickened of late by the purchase of Tome of Ultimate Mapping, which has really been helping me crack the barrier to entry of CC3. There's one thing, though, that I'm hoping someone can shed some light on for me: text justification. If I make a text label it appears at my mouse cursor and I just move it around and plop it down wherever I want. What is the purpose of all of the various text justify options (bottom left, top left, mid far left, etc., etc.) if I can just manually place my text labels wherever I want them?

Thank you in advance for any help.

I feel silly. After I posted my question I went back to reading my Tome and found the answer. My apologies.

Hey, don't apologize for asking a question -- or for answering it yourself! And don't feel silly, either. We're all learning (some of us *blushes* more than others).

And, I for one would be glad to know what you figured out. :-)

It's on the bottom of page 24 and the top of page 25 of the Tome of Ultimate Mapping. Basically it says that when Windows renders the final map image sometimes text will get slightly resized relative to the rest of the map. This could have the effect of nudging text labels into unreadable (or less readable) parts of the map. Justification refers to where the text appears relative to the insertion point (i.e., where you click the mouse on the map when placing text). If the text ends up getting a mild relative resize as I described above it will never violate where it is in relation to the insertion point. So, for example, Top Left justification makes the insertion point at the topmost and leftmost corner of the text block. Any resizing of the text will never go above or left of the insertion point.

This doesn't necessarily seem to me like an incredibly important thing for most purposes. But it does let you have some small bit of control over where text will get "nudged" if Windows needs to resize it relative to the map.

  • I've had that happen to me a few times. My surface maps have names like 'map GM'. So I place it wrong, it shows as 'map G'. My surfce map layout is confusing enough without that happening.
