New Tome of Ultimate Mapping

I've purchased and downloaded Remy Monsen's new Version 3 of the Tome of Ultimate Mapping. I obviously haven't read it from cover to cover yet, but I have checked out quite a few things that were unclear to me ... enough that I can say, "Congratulations, Remy! Great job!"

However, if every CC3 user is smart enough to get the new tome, there will be a noticeable drop in postings in the "How do I ...?" and "Why doesn't...?" categories here.

All in all ... an excellent new product!

Thanks Mark. Glad you enjoyed it.
  • Given the very reasonable price, it was not a difficult decision to place my order and I look forward to perusing it in detail soon.

I may have missed it, but until I actually added it to my cart, I hadn't seen the price quoted anywhere. I think that's a mistake - you should never have to add something to a cart simply to find out how much it costs. (Especially when it's such good value!)

No printed version though? :'( That's a shame. I love my printed copy of the original Tome. It's a lot easier to work on maps and keep it open on the desk nearby. Plus the example maps are wonderful to view in printed form.

Are there any plans to offer the Tome in hard copy later, maybe?

  • Thanks for offering this at a reasonable price. Bought my copy and can't wait to check it out.

The last two posters either have trouble seeing or have software that filters out parts of the website. (Unfortunately, many kinds of security software do just that.) On my screen the price is listed clearly along with the information on how to get the print version, which is forthcoming.

@Vintyri - Excellent! I swear I saw nothing about a print version when I looked on Wednesday. But then, I'm told I swear too much, so... *shrug*

EDIT: Hmm. I just checked the product page again and it clearly states the Tome is a download. Even the FAQ explicitly states it is a download. :-(

EDIT to my EDIT: Double hmmm. I just purchased my upgraded Tome (what a deal!) and, while I saw the purchase price during the upgrade process, I did not see anything about the print version, other than the note on the order for the original version that said the print copies would ship in September (2005, I think). Can someone at PF please confirm Vintyri's good news about the print version? And, if there are any Web gurus cruising this forum, can one of you guess why my FF 11 browser (on Win 7 SP1) might not show that info?

    Thanks,
    ~Dogtag
  • I purchased the Tome today, been going through most of the CC3 stuff and got a mixed feeling about it. It's nice, it's complete, but does not bring so much in addition to the manual itself. I mean it's more detailed, I learnt some things already but thought some topics I did not understand completely in the manual are no more detailed here.

But anyway, for the price, I think it is really worth buying... I definitely do not regret it :)

While I can't confirm nor deny a print version in the future, what I can say is that in any case, it won't be until after all the add-ons that are to be upgraded to V3 status have arrived. That way, if a print version is made, it will contain the proper version of all add-ons. Currently it covers compatibility updates for products I know ProFantasy will release v3 versions of in the future.

Anything in particular you are thinking about here? Each and every annual issue does come with it's own instruction pdf, detailing how to use them and providing tips for mapping with them, so I generally stayed away from them in the tome for that very reason.

Nope. My mistake. I could have sworn that I saw a print version option for GBP 14.95, but when I looked again, it wasn't there. Maybe it all occurred because the breweries here in Northern Bavaria do such great work. Who knows? Apologies. Happy weekend.

Yes, but not on the product page itself, nor in the emails we received announcing it. And since the emails link directly to the product page...
  • Remarquable. Couldn't miss it!
    Thanks Remy!

I am someone who started buying CC3 products approximately 2 or so years ago after having been a FractalMapper user. Although FractalMapper is less sophisticated and capable than CC3, I was always able to get it to do what I wanted more or less. I've purchased CC3, DD3, CD3, SS1, SS2, FT Pro, FT3 Upgrade, Dioramas, Character Artist, and Annual 1. I'm not a wealthy person and this represents a substantial amount of money for me. After trying various online resources, including Sweeney's YouTube videos, I was starting to come to believe that the money I spent was lost money. I even went back to creating my campaign maps on my old version of FractalMapper.

Then I received the email for Tome of Ultimate Mapping. The price was so completely reasonable and I had already spent so much money on CC3 products that I figure what the heck. It was worth $14 for the possibility of finally getting more use out of my CC3 stuff. And wow, is it ever completely worth it! At 2 or 3 times the price it would have been worth it for me. It's really helping me understand the workings of this complex software and I'm making maps!

Thank you very much ProFantasy and Remy Monsen, et. al. for putting this product out. I suspect it may not be nearly as much of an incredible value for veteran users as it is for me, but I'm ecstatic about it.
