Fractal Terrains Export to CC3 Map - Sheets/Layers

Greetings all, I'm a new user and I appreciate the time taken to answer my questions. I'll say my background is a programmer with also a lot of CAD and modeling experience, though not in the last few years. I feel comfortable with the software thus far, just uncertain I'm not missing something.

Basically I've created a world in Fractal Terrains I'm quite pleased with. Now I've zoomed in one section, saved a View that I can return to if I need to, and exported various versions to CC3 files from coast copies to full.

What I want to do is taken that export and start dressing it up to use for an area map. However, I feel like I'm either doing something wrong or maybe I'm expecting more than I should... Basically the export is all on a common sheet. Is it treated as a bitmap or are these individual objects like the land and water? I think what I need to do is find an export (maybe Coast?), choose the colors I want for the water area and the land with a border I like, export that, and then start to add further features in CC3. I feel this is so because I won't be able to augment the borders, water or land shadings, etc. in CC3. I think that I have to treat it as a background I can thusly mock up.

I've watched all the tutorials on CC3 and FT 3. I just feel unsure that I'm not missing something or some feature.

Thanks for your comments.

  • Additionally I'm finding the number of miles in my view I'm exporting is different between FT and the CC3 view.

FT tells me the west to east is 80 miles. But according to the scale when I open the Full version in CC3, it would be at least 400 miles. Perhaps I'm missing something in a paper space to model space sort of thinking.

    Thanks.
  • I apologize if this starts to seem more like a blog than a thread. My apologies. I do see I can hide certain sheets and portions of the exports will disappear. I will try experimenting more before commenting further but I do appreciate everyone's help and time.

    Thank you.
  • I use the fast export, and hide things until I find the look I want. Then I delete what I don't want.
  • Thanks Jim. Yes I'm finding I wasn't thinking of it properly. I do believe I can achieve it with the export. I'm going between the fast and full at the moment.

I do feel the scale that the export gave me is erroring however. The measurement tool in either program reads as I expect but the scale is extremely far off. Have you seen this?
  • I really don't use the distance scale in FT3. I decide what size the map is, and export as a picture file. I then create a map, providing my own x and y values, and import the graphic and draw over it. Layer bmp and sheet grid.

So, I won't be much help with that.
  • Quite alright, I appreciate hearing how others use the software and what their process is. So thank you!

At the moment I've deleted the scale bar that was exported. I then found a scale symbol I wanted to use and properly scaled it to be the right distance and then stuck it on the cartouche sheet and scale layer.
