Creating a new map from a section of another map

In CC3 is it possible to take a section of a map and use it as the basis for a separate map? I'm creating my campaign world in CC3 and I'm detailing a continent-sized map, which is 1,000 miles by 800 miles in size. I'd like to be able to take a single region and make a separate, zoomed-in regional map out of it.

Thank you in advance for any insights.

Yes, but with some manual work.

The most common method is basically to use clipboard copy to copy everything that is inside (fully or partially) the zoomed area to a new map (Set up with the appropriate size for the region). Then use cut, split and trim to remove the parts of the entities that goes beyond the map border.
Finally, you may wish to use fractalize on coastlines and rivers to increase their detail level.

If you type CUTMENUON on the CC3 command line, then restart CC3, you should end up with a new menu in the menu bar. This menu contains selected commands to make this task easier. Note that this is an experimental feature, and may not always work properly.
  • My experience with the cutmenu is it gets you part of the way there, so I use it. As Monsen says, it is experimental, so your results may vary -- for my part, it has never caused a problem but there are some entities that it doesn't cut properly. So it eliminates some of the work but not all.

If you're persnickety about your coastlines (and river courses) like I am, don't just fractilize your coastline. If you look at a series of real-world maps, you'll see that there are details, such as narrow inlets that get scaled away in the larger map. The way the fractal command works, it can't really add back this information. It's great if you have a relatively uninteresting section of coast and you just want to make it less obviously angular.

Some of the things I look for to make the zoomed-in coast more interesting:
    * Bumps or swells in the coastline that I can separate into a close-lying island and a channel between it and the main coast.
    * Long sections of coast where I can put a string of barrier islands
    * Peninsulas that I can split into an island or sea mount chain
    * Places where I can put narrow inlets that reach into the interior
    * Smooth sections of coastline that I can make even smoother

Once you have the coast, don't forget to add small islands and other tiny details. They make a huge difference in how realistic the coast looks.
