SYMBOLS PROJECT UPDATE - Back at it - and I made a decision!

Hi kids...
I am feeling a little better - and have found fresh inspiration to start working on my symbols set afresh (afresh? Hmmm - is that really a word, or a just a literal embellishment, and didn't I already say "fresh"?) - Which - I must warn you - will be MASSIVELY, HUMUNGOUSLY, MONSTEROUSLY, HORRENDOUSLY HUGE!!!!! I am already up to 909 symbols - and I haven't even really started yet. I am keeping the slightly "cartoonish / comic booky" style - and establishing it as my own - BUT WAIT KIDS - THERE'S MORE!!!

I have decided to GIVE this package to the community freely (when it is finished) as a set of symbols catalogues, and also perhaps sell them individually as clipart art in other venues later on (we're probably talking years down the road) as part of my own art portfolio - IF I were ever to decide to sell them in some manner.

I'd license them to Profantasy for free, no pay, no royaltys, - and other folks out there in other venues possibly would buy them from me to silk screen onto T-Shirts, Print out stickers for there bumpers and rear car windows, have them put on coffee mugs - whatever, lol. Basically only the characters - and a few symbol types would be feasably useful for that anyway.

I'll write it into the license package about how maps that you make with them will be your's to sell, incorporate into other works, or distribute however you want to in the universe, but the images themselves are mine, mine, mine, miney whiney mine - and they are not to be distributed EXCEPT as parts of your maps, and Profantasy shall of course rank as the authorized distributor of these symbol catalogue(s) - should they choose to do that (I'm thinking that if that's the case - then it could be via registration, or via the Annuals, or a combo of both - whatever they might decide - it's all hypothetical and academic at this stage)...

In short, and to get the abbreviated version - somehow - you guys are getting these. I just have to FINISH them first - which hopefully will not be sometime in the year 3047, when as everyone knows - the Earth will be invaded by giant, carnivorous, intelligent bees from Alpha Centauri, Lol. After they are FINISHED - I will officially release them for use and distribution.

I also have to get away from drawing too many mermaids - which is a compulsion stemming both from my lonliness, and my fondness for sea food, lol ;).

I would - HOWEVER - appreciate any donations of ICY HOT therapuetic cream, any bottles of Absorbine Junior, or any tubes of Ben Gay or Abaulm that you might have laying around your medicine cabinet, because I am going to have one DOOZY of a case of "Pen Cramp", lol :).

I just got a few new pens tonight, and I am in scribble mode. I'll crank out a couple hundred more of these before the old Attention Deficit Disorder kicks in - and I switch to something else, lol.

  • I like these alot! they've got me thinking up new maps to draw. I was thrown off by the sea nymph icon; at first glance I couldn't figure out why the dolphin had a cannon on its back... then it came into focus.

    Great work!

Dolphins with cannons? is that the medieval version of sharks with lasers?

Great symbols though. But instead of creating multiple apples (and other symbols) in different colors, I would recommend you simply make them varicolor instead.

Yep-that I intend on doing after getting these puppies all drawed up, and varicolor is something that I'm going to have to get the hang of. Wish there was was a tutorial about that or something. Gotta bone up on it. Also - I have to get these scaled right. If I batch scale them all at a standard 300 width - some of the icons might come out looking uber goofy. Some of the crop symbols are specifically colored to represent REAL subgroups - and are colored in a way to be as accurate as I could to represent - for example - the difference between a "Granny" apple, and a red apple.

There is one in the new tome. I am currently hard at work getting the final layout ready.
  • Coolness- in the meantime though I was wondering if the CC3 manual covered that - and what pages specifically for quicky reference?
  • 1 month later
  • You will put it in CC3 symbol format only when finished? Or do you plan to release it as the work progress? I am very excited by the possibilities that these symbols will bring for my mapping!

Actually - you'll be getting the images that you wanted me to do first - full rez - but they will be also be made into symbols with the rest of the set(s) and published with them when they are done as complete CC3 catalogues..
  • Wowsers! These are fantastic. I'm falling in love with the "cartoonie" style.

It would be cool if you could do mountains, forests, and structures in this style as well. I would love to make a few of my maps using your style. :D

Shessar I AM doing those "standard" symbols to my friend, (mountains, trees, bridges, town, city, and village markers, etc.), when these are done - I'll probably have to break them up into seperate catalogues because I've already done over 900 images (including number and letter map marker sets), and I haven't even started on the main core symbol types yet (well - I've drawn some mountain sets - but they're still black and white hand drawings that are lingering in a pocket binder on my bookshelf). Everything already drawn is still in the "Phase 2" catagory - i.e.:

    Production Methodology:

Phase 1 : Brain Storming And Planning.

Phase 2: Draw Them Up - Digitally Colorize Them And Them Prep Them For Transparency / Symbol Conversion.

Phase Three: "Cherry Pick Them Out (of the multiple images where I might have 7 mermaid type images for example - keep the "good" ones - ditch the "so so" ones.), Alpha Them, Prep A Few For Varicolor Possibly, And Then Convert Them All Into CC3 Symbols / Catalogues.

My goal is to basically create a "mapping kit" for fantasy and medieval type maps that covers almost any type of factoid that you might need on a wargaming, RPG, or fictional literary overland map in the Fantasy and / or Medieval genres.

    So far I've got:

    Crops & Livestock,
    Farms & Farmland,
    Mines & Resources,
    Food, Dining, & Water,
    Knowledge & Information,
    Magical Items,
    Various Monsters & Creep Crawlies,
    Major Fantasy Genre Races,
Numbers, Letters, Arrows, "X" and "+" markers, And Pointers,
A basic Cartouche and a few Compass Types.

I have also been designing fonts that I'de like to throw in there as well I guess - I am already uploading fonts to the library here so I'm kinda waxing and waning on that idea.

This IS HUGE! I would gadly pay for your work when you have finished it.

NOPE - No pay for this kinda stuff. I'm actually wanting to get paid for my 3D modelling and other stuff - I wanna do 3D models and general purpose clip art and sell that.
this kinda stuff I do for fun. Here's an example of the kinda stuff that I'de like to get paid for some day:
  • The tank is fu$%#$% awesome! Congratulations. You have some great art here.

Thank you. Subdivision modelling is pretty easy once you learn the tricks to it - it's U.V. mapping and rigging that's a pain. I'm still learning that - and it's as tedious as performing brain surgery on a mosquito, lol :).
  • The space ship reminds me of a manta ray. Good stuff !

Thanks Jimmy, These are a few of the 3d projects I have in cold storage that I poke at here and there from time to time. When I get them done I'm gonna sell them through DAZ or Renderosity - maybe TurboSQUID. I'm giving the APC and maybe the shuttle detailed interiors. I just opened an account at wordpress, and I'll have a blog going shortly that will be useful to everybody insomuch as links and info and such.

Footnote - I'm making a Camper for the hovercar, lol.

Back to the topic at hand - I have added a few symbols to my CC3 symbols project since this thread originally debuted - and I'll probably start concentrating on the main core symbols here shortly. been getting info on GIMP shadow effects and alpha masking and such.
  • The manta ship looks to me like it would be great for a space faring culture, like the Kzin.

Actually Jim I was going to make 3d models and then render them for CC3 symbols - but they were to complex color wise - and didn't translate well to the map environment.
When I scaled them the details got garbled. The "Manta" - or "Bat" - or whatever - is my idea of a space shuttle that can take off and fly like the B2 until it reaches near sub orbital altitude - at which point it shuts down its jet engines and fires up it RAT boosters - and becomes a space craft.
