Not Understanding Multipolys

I kind of sort of understand the theory behind multipolys, that you are turning multiple entities into one entity, but I can't wrap my head around why they exist... in other words, I'm not getting the practical uses of them. Could anyone give some examples of how you use these in your maps? I've been plowing through the CC3 Help Files, which are extremely useful, but this particular concept isn't sinking in very well... it mentions that multipolys are "great for creating backgrounds to dungeons, adding a color contour map or creating complex filled shapes." I get the last part, making shapes is pretty obvious. I don't understand the other two.

A multipoly can be used to create a poly with one (or more) holes in the middle. This is very useful when you do not wish to cover up stuff in the map for example. For example, the dungeon background mentioned. I sometimes use a multipoly for the dungeon background, placed after the walls sheet in the sheet order. This serves to hide the wall shadows that go on the outside of the dungeon, leaving only the ones inside the rooms visible. For this, you need a multipoly, because you need a hole where the dungeon room/corridors are.
There is a example for how to do this in the updated Tome (Which is not available just yet, though).
  • So how would you do that? I'm guessing that you trace the walls, then multipoly that with a rectangle the size of the map's border?

Create a copy of the outer walls, combine them to one path, then convert it to a poly. Now multipoly that resultant poly with the original map background poly.
