Outdoors Battlemap

Hello all, I am in need of an outdoors battlemap. I have used some of the cave and debris and vegetation that came with CD3, but I was wondering if any of you have different ways of doing some outdoor maps. What do you guys do when you need to setup a map for an ambush on a road or across the a bridge or anything?

  • I use DD3, and start with a "Dungeons" map type -> "Decide Settings Myself" -> "DD3 Dungeon" -> decide on your map dimensions -> select map background to match the common terrain (dirt, grass, etc.) -> Finish.

Then, you can add add water and other terrain using the "Default Water" and "Default Terrain" buttons. Add vegetation from whatever symbols you have access to and off you go...

I've attached an incredibly simple example that I made in less than 5 minutes. This is for an encounter in a swamp. Basic, I know - but it gives you an idea of the 3 main items I've just highlighted above.

I hope this helps - I'd love to see what you come up with... :)
  • Thanks Trenloe! I'll share mine later today.

  • Battlemaps never get old, so this is not necro'ing this thread ;-).

I have used a similar setup, but I want to add a few things:

    1. Elevation ( a few very low hills, and one escarpment)
    2. A small part of a crenellated castle wall
    3. Snow

Do you have any ideas on how to do these?

I've been working on showing elevation. And I think I have finally gotten a result I like:
My most recent map showing elevation

In the same album you can see some earlier attempts that turned out well zoomed out, but the shadows were to light to be easily readable while zoomed in on a VTT.

I got the technique from dblade at the Dundjinni forums.
