Noob question on Output Scale

Like the title says, I'm a noob. I am using CC3 with the Cosmographer add in. My ultimate goal for this project is to output a 24' x 36' deck plan for Space Hulk. I want the the individual grid squares on the printed map to be 1.5 ' each. I have started the map and here are the drawing properties:

Style: Cos. Deck Plan Bitmap
Drawing Units: Feet
Inches per Unit: 12 w/Rescale checked
Distance Display Format: Numeric Decimal Places : 5

My overall drawing is 20 squares x 23 squares. The Hull is 16x21. I will output to an HP inkjet printer that print to 13 x 19 paper, and paste them together.

Am I on the right track? I guess I'm just having trouble wrapping my head around some of these concepts. Let me know if if I haven't supplied enough information for you folks to help me.

Thanks in advance,

atomic

Yes. You are good. Just keep drawing your map with feet as a drawing unit.

Then, when the time to print comes, simply print it using the Scale Factor option, and enter 1.5" as the paper distance. For drawing distance, enter whatever the size of your squares are (You never said how big your squares are on the map). If you use 5 feet squares as many role playing games, then just enter 5' in the drawing distance box, otherwise simply enter whatever size you are using (Ig you are unsure, just measure the length of a single square with the Info->Distance tool.
Set up the required numbers of sheets using the tiling option.
  • Awesome, thanks Monsen! Looking at Info->Distance shows 70. That seems a far cry larger than 5. Will that cause me problems?

Well, it does sound like a suspiciously large distance for a single square. Given that most of the drawing tools are set up for a more "regular" scale, you might find that symbols using the default scale is very small, and lines are very thin. But other than that, it is not a big problem. You can print at any scale you desire, so printing a 70' square as 1.5" on paper is no different than printing 5' on 1.5" inches.
  • I did notice that textures and other lines seemed awful small. Will I be shooting myself in the foot by changing to a more "normal" scale of 5?

No. Using 5' or 10' squares is probably a better option for you.

I don't assume space hulk defines an in-game size for the squares? I don't have the rulebook in front of me right now, so I can't check, but a space marine is pretty large, so if I should guess, I would say a 10' square is appropriate.
  • No there is no in-game scale for Space Hulk (at least not one I can find.)

Where/how do I change that scale?

You would rescale the whole map. Make sure no layers are frozen or hidden (Layer dialog, Thaw all, Show All), then do Non-visual Scale (right-click Scale button for that), right-click, select All, right-click Do It.

For the scale factor type in "10/70", hit enter, right-click to accept the default scale origin (0,0). Now your map should have the correct scale.

Just make sure you really have the correct current scale of your map. A grid of 70' seems unlikely to happen by accident. Post your map here if you want us to take a look.
