Hex Template

I'm new and liking what I am able to do with the software so far, but I do have one problem I am working around currently.

The hex grid system. It appears that the hexes always start out as a full hex in the first row. I'm used to a system where the first row is a half hex, and then resizing the area. The end result I want is a hex shaped area with hexes inside that will match up with another hex laid beside it. (Like AH Magic Realms). Currently I just added another sheet with a big hex outlining the smaller hexes and I'll just crop the results.

I have tried offsetting the starting location of the hex grid, but that appears to be more work than my current fix. A square with half hex grids would line up, and avoid some of the hex template angle problems.

Is there a way to start the hex grid with half grids in the first row? Perhaps laying down the grid and then moving the boundry to start at the half way spot, or adding a white strip layer to hide the background and half the starting hex grid?

Currently I have CC#,Cities and Dungeons addons. The project is creating a random board from templates for Dragon Rage, I missed out on the fun again games limited supply.

By default hex grids start at 0,0 but you can specify where you want them to start (either with the mouse or by entering coords). Find the coords of the center point of the hex nearest the bottom left corner and enter the negative of those coords. For instance, if the hex center is at 10,12 you would enter -10,-12 as the starting point for your hex grid and that will start you off on a half hex (once you trim the hex grid to the map border).

In order to trim the grid, you will need to explode it first.

EDIT: I just realized that that is probably what you meant by offset. That didn't register when I first read your post. As far as I know, that is the easiest way to accomplish what you want.

You can use "Select Points" button in the grid overlay command to start the hex grid somewhat below the bottom map border.
  • Thank you guys the negative coordinates will work. It didn't click that I could go off the boundry. It will take some trial and error, but it will line up eventually :)
