a typical Cambrian world ?

I was looking at using FT3 to create a 'typical Cambrian' world for one of my sites.

While I was able to find drawings of Cambrian Earth... I' more interested ni what woudl be typical.

Are the continents rough, not much wearing down of the land ? Small islands, large swamp and marsh areas ?

What do you suggest for such a planet ?

Thanks.

  • This is the one I came up with so far.

I would really, really, really, really recommend using the fractal function "RMF with Perlin's Improved Noise" rather than "Ridged Multifractal" for any new work. Doing so avoids the odd tire track artifacts caused by bugs in the FT1 "Ridged Multifractal" fractal function.
  • Even on such a small image, the tire tracks were the very first thing I noticed, even before reading Joe's comment.
  • Maybe its Philip Jose Farmers 'Lavalite World' ?

Okay, I'll try the other method.

I'm currently going to school for a degree in Geology so I will add a few points.

I'm going to give you a short, short version. The Cambrian period only had four continents, a higher temperature and water level with very little glaciation. The higher ocean levels caused Epeiric seas to form in the lowland areas. Since your asking about swamps and marsh areas I'm assuming you want a bit on Flora and Fauna as well? Well Oxygen is relatively new being introduced by micro-organisms so there is no plant life or animals on land. The oceans start to get smaller animals with Trilobites being the most famous. I will skip the Pre-Cambrian explosion and Cambrian Extinction, as there was two extinction periods, as I could go on for pages.

The earth is not young and there have been several orogeny events (mountain building) so you will have mountains, foot hills, and your standard geography MINUS the effects caused from vegetation which has a huge impact on erosion.

Okay that is a very rough and dirty overview. I would say your maps represent an even younger earth with all the little islands and landmasses. Not a lot of proof is available to suggest what the palaeography was like in the Archean and Early Proterozoic so that is all I've been taught. I don't know enough about planetary sciences/geology to offer a different view point (I'm only an under graduate)
  • I know about the Pre-Cambrian die off. I'll see what I can do about adding in mountains. I know a tiny bit of geology.

    Thanks.
  • I'll keep trying... I keep getting interconnected islands with the occasional ocntinent connected with land masses to what might be islands if the interconnection wasn't there. Hmmm. The interconnecting land masses go away if I increase roughness. I'll keep twiddling with it.
