Proper Dimensions for 8.5 x 11 paper

Hi,

I am just getting started with CC3. I am trying to get my map to fill an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper. Whenever I print a map, it is never centered on the page, and I can't quite figure out the dimensions to fill that space effectively. I have searched around through the forums and haven't found anything about this. Any tips?

You have your dimension right there in front of you: 8.5 : 11. Make the map 1100 units (e.g. miles) wide and 850 units high, and you have the exact dimensions to fit a letter-sized piece of paper. Only the relative size is important, not the exact measurements.

To get the map print out properly, make sure you have zoomed to exactly what you want printed, than use the "Active Window" option in the print dialog, instead of "Everything".

I've forgotten it in the past. Its not exactly obvious unless you read lots of printer manuals.

It is way too early. I read "Paper Dimensions for 8.5 x 11 paper" and just stared at it wondering what you were on about. Now don't I feel like the eejit.

We bought some printers where I work. Some of them had mostly useful manuals. The rest, the majority, had a nice poster on how to plug the power cord and usb cable in. Yuck.

Printers have a wide range of printable areas and margins, and they don't always report accurately to software what they are. Some of them aren't centered. CC3 tries to discover what the printer's printable area is and uses that to calculate how to print something. If the opposite margins aren't symmetrical, the centre of the drawing will not be the centre of the paper, but the centre of the printable area.

To find your printable area and its centre, print out this map. It should be set to Active Window, Fit to Page.

If you then want to make your drawing dimensions fit the exact aspect ratio of your printable area, then you can.
