I have been looking everywhere for a guide to creating an aerial style overland map. Most CC maps use symbols to appear as maps (obviously). I would love to create a map of my game world that had more of an appearance like looking down on the world. Mountain ranges would actually be shaded to give an idea of their elevation and location of major peaks. City symbols would appear to be scaled down versions of their actual maps. Coastal reefs would appear with a different texture and color. I created some similar effects in Photoshop (see attached), but wasn't completely happy with it. And it would be much better and more consistent to create a map in CC3.
Any thoughts?
In line with the scifi, I'd like to see something along the lines of a post-apocalyptic setting. Most ruins symbols thus far are for older settings. Ruins of modern and scifi civilizations would be awesome.
I'd also like to see a detailed guide to creating new building styles and symbols for a city.
I would like to see something on doing city zone/district maps (i.e. no buildings present).
Organizational chart toolkit.
Ship (sailing/rowing/etc) deckplanning toolkit

I would love to see maps like Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series, here. I am particularly thinking of the Tanchico map, which seems to combine overland and city map styles; and the first color Wheel of Time map (after the black and white ones, not the first map on the page), which is so beautifully hand-painted. I would love a symbol set that could recreate the painted look of that map.
Just read a post about hills. I was thinking that hills would be a good idea for city and dungeon maps. Especially for battle maps. I know there is a way of doing them using shaded transparencies. There should be a way of doing modular hills this way.
I _LOVE_ new mapping styles. I can't get enough of them. I use Mercator maps and John Speed maps regularly -- far more than the standard styles. The Sarah Wroot maps and the Pete Fenlon maps are also wonderful, as was the black & white style. I'm also in love with the heraldry issue, which completely blew my mind (that "tavern signs" annual sounds neat).
However, after creating my first D&D 4e battle map, I know I'm going to want more symbols for those. Perhaps I can port some pngs over from Dundjinni. Anyway, I think I'm going to want a lot of stuff with which to make my own battle maps.
Keep up the good work. The annual is the best thing ever.
Well, allright. I like more variation as well, but currently I'm more interested in creating Harnworld maps and found the CHMP (Harn Mapping) project for CC2 quite satisfying. I haven't tried the package below for myself by now, but this seems to be quite interesting:
Posted By: TargasGive us a feedback, if you try it out. Anyone had tested this package here ?
I am a subscriber to the website that makes those, so since I have access to the entire archive, I can't comment on the content on those packages specifically. But generally, the content is quite ok. If you visit the homepage, you can access the product catalog. It has thumbnail previews of some of the stuff at least.
For CC2 they offered additional random dungeon parts which I mentioned earlier would make a good annual addition. Extra random generator parts and instructions on how to make them. The cave pieces where really good.
Also there where two different programs that would use CC2 for random dungeons. One was Dungrand and the other one I had but I can't seem to find it. It would also place skirmish figures in the rooms from the random dungeon. Kind of like using the Jamis Buck generator. Another one was Map Mage (although I never tried it) is suppose to export to CC2.
That looks amazing, Ralf, and I find the idea extremely cool. I'm really looking forward to the next issue!
I very much like science-fiction settings but mainly as a player. Looking at the images which you have posted and the previews of the Cosmographer 3 symbols on Simon’s block makes me want to GM a science-fiction campaign again :-) Thank you.
Oohhh I like this one Ralf!, thank you for giving us some SCIFI stuff.. most of the time I'm stuck using Astro 2 for scifi mapping stuff and while it's good it doesn't 'mesh' well with certain map styles.. or do some of the stuff I want, best of all this way it's fairly easy to add my own symbols.. procedual planets in Lightwave (3D program) Rendered and dumped in = a billion planets.
Posted By: DrammattexThanks, Targas. I've seen some of those at Gen Con.
What I'm looking for, however, is styles for more rocks, more trees, more objects. I have SS2 and it's great. I just want more.
Are you the same Drammattex from the WotC boards?
There's only one, good sir Dan! I've been a Profantasy addict/evangelist since TSR's "Core Rules" product which included Campaign Mapper, Profantasy's stripped down version of Campaign Cartographer. I haven't been a frequent visitor to the Profantasy boards, but man do I ever love the annuals.

I'd like something useful for my modern military campaigns. I'd be very interested in something useful for tactical engagements (a la phoenix command) or maps in 1:50000 scale that could be given as handouts as part of the briefing. The first number of Armchair General had this excellent Normandy map as an insert which style I'd love to be able to replicate for my Darby's Rangers campaign about to land on the beaches of Maiori. For this campaign I tried to draw a map of Arzew fortress with CC3 but got frustrated before finishing it and ended up drawing something by hand.
unfortunately I couldn't find a sample of the NATO 1:50000 we use in the military in my house, but I did scan a small sample of the Armchair General map I mentioned. The scale in the sample is slightly too big. Ideally each grid would be 1000m instead of 2000m
For November I'd really like to see Terrain Features
Like the hills as described earlier in this thread. They could be used for city maps and the Battle Maps. Make them modular
Chasms/Cliffs could be used for Overland, Battle Maps, Dungeons and Cities. Make them in the standard Brown, Grey and Vari. Also Modular to get different shapes and depths.
rinadurron, I had never seen a Whell of Time map before, but that is just like the style I'm looking forward. I'd love to see an annual on this type of map. In the meantime, does anyone have any ideas about how to go about it?
I really miss some symbols from CD2 like boats, wagons, statues, crates etc. in CD3. The CD3 symbols are great, but its almost only housing. I would love to see a symbol addon for CD3 covering all but housing in the annual, to detail those cities more.
Another thing I miss are more fortification symbols for style A and B in CD3.

Here is what I was thinking of Shadow Overlays
Of course you would need different sizes, modular to make different shapes, and maybe with different light sources for the shadows?

Another on custom Templates and Map Borders would be neat as well.

Yeah, I've been a fan since the CORE RULES days as well, it was my first taste, and I've been hooked ever since.
Keep up the Good Work Simon, Nigel, Ralf, Linda and others!
Looking through we have a few suggestions.. hehe.. btw Ralf, the annual for this month = Amazing just finished DL'n it. Great work.
Another thing I'd love to see are tools to make simple western style maps (http://www.rollspel.com/pdf/western/wyoming.pdf the maps are on page 10 and onwards)
