Ruins of the Undermountain

I've started to convert Ruins of the Undermountain into GURPS to relive the good old days (with a new system). Before tackling the huge chore of converting the classic maps to CC3 I thought I would give a shout to the community to see if anyone has already done this. I did find a CC2 map of Level One, although I have no idea where I got that from.

If nobody has then no matter I was planning on doing it any ways.

  • Actually this has been done. Not sure what the current status is but check out this website.

Here is an example of one of the maps that have been drawn. Looks very nice.

The maps are also available in the old Forgotten Realms Interactive Atlas in CC2 format. Unfortunately, it is not in sale anymore, but it is available from sites such as ebay. Sometimes, you can even find one reasonably priced.
  • Holy cow the Forgotten Realms Interactive Atlas is expensive! £42-£97 is well beyond my price range! I will keep my eye out for it though. Thanks for the heads up.

The BIP Project looks great but I can't seem to register and they don't seem to think they will ever get it done. Oh well guess I will do it by hand!
  • Well I scanned in the original 4 maps and I placed an order for Ruins of the Undermountain II.

I'm going to do these up and get them printed as an A1 poster. I need to run through the forums on properly scaling the map size and how to use the map I create and then convert areas into battle maps. I used to know all that stuff but I tend to forget things quickly.

I'm going to try to keep them close to the original style, although I will probably change the fill style to a type of cross hatch.

It will be nice to have these as CC3 as I am building up my GURPS converted RotUM in Microsoft OneNote.

I will continue to use this thread to post on my progress. When I finish would I be able to share them or is there legal reasons why I would not be able to?

The original maps are copyrighted, so sharing recreations of them would be a breach of copyright law, and therefore, not allowed.

If you make maps detailing levels of your own design, those would be ok to share, but not straight recreations of the original ones.
  • Oh I plan to make some originals. This is a way for me to have a ready made adventure while I ease back into map making after such a long hiatus.
  • Okay Monsen, Ralf (or anyone else),

I seem to have forgotten how to do some things here. It is amazing how much you forget.

    I want to be able to print this as a A1 poster : 594 × 841 mm (23.4 × 33.1 in)

What size do I need to make my CC3 map to have the map fit the scale properly? I have saved my scanned image in three resolutions 300 dpi (7016 x 9933 ppi, my standard), 150 dpi (3508 x 4967 ppi) and 72 dpi (1684 x 2384 ppi).

As always, base your map upon real-world size, as CC3 will scale it to fit whatever printing are you request anyway. That is the beauty of working with vector drawings. Just give the aspect ratio a thought though.
The Undermountain map in the FR Atlas is 1700x2550 drawing units (which represents feet in a dungeon map) in size, so that should be the proper size of level 1. I believe level 2 is the same size, and level 3 is twice the size, if I remember my Undermountain correctly

I have been working on creating this map from the old and new version of Undermountain. In the latest Expedition to Undermountain it really didn't do a great job at laying out the complete maps, so I went back to the original maps and created a CC3 version of the first level so far. It has taken me about 3 months working on it occasionally just to do the first level. I am still tweaking it and I am writing up room descriptions for each room based on both the original and new release of the dungeon leaning heavily on the original.
  • What do you mean by 'Drawing Units'?
  • Drawing unit is what CC2/CC3 sees as the unit of measurement on the maps.
