Overland Mapping tools & Sheets

Hello everyone,

I've been working with the tutorials to learn the program but there is one place that I seem to be having a lot of trouble, Overland mapping tools (specifically Countours and Default Terrains) in conjunction with sheets.

Most of the tutorials will use a specific Active Sheet Effect. In the first tutorial I went through the Countours and Default Terrains I created were automatically placed in the correct sheet. However I have found that that is not always the case. Is there an easy way to force these tools to create objects in the correct layers so that I'm not having to tweak every tool that I use as I need it.

I'm sure that I'm overlooking something here so any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

In what circumstances did you have trouble with this? All drawing tools are set up to go to a specific sheet, and I haven't seen any case where this doesn't work (Unless you try to use another drawing tool style than the template were designed for. In this case, you won't have the correct sheets in your map, and they will be created at the bottom of the sheet list, and must be manually re-arranged)

Other than that, all tools draw their entities in the sheet specified when you go to all drawing tools -> advandced -> Properties. notice that if there is an asterisk behind the sheet name, it will look for any sheet that starts with the specified name, looking first at your current sheet.
  • Thanks for the response Monsen,

One of the first maps that I was playing with I tried to use "SS1 Fantasy B" as the Active Sheet Effect. Then when I select "Countour, Default 5" to use as a mountain base it places it on the land sheet and not the "COUNTOUR (LAND)" sheet.

When I click on the Default countour line tool button and checked the style setting and it is set to Overland SS1 b, and the Insert on the current sheet box is unchecked.

When I use "Overland CC3 1000x800" as the Active Sheet Effect all of the countours are properly placed in the COUNTOURS (LAND) sheet.

Anyway, I hope that this is enough information. Thanks for the help.

Actually the Overland SS1b contours are set up to go on an TERRAIN* sheet. Care to post your map so we can take a look what is going wrong?
  • Hmmm.....the Status Bar was indicating that it was being placed in the Land sheet. I'll check that tonight when I get home. If its not I'll get the map up for you to see.

  • Ok, please keep in mind that this is just me playing around....not a serious map.

I've checked it over. There's not a COUNTOURS (LAND) sheet when using SS1 b; however, when using the "Default Countour Line" tool all of the countours are being placed on the Land Sheet (which may be indeed be correct). When using the "Default Terrain" tool some of the time the terrain type will be placed on the Terrain Sheet but sometimes, as with the "Default Terrain Light" its placed on the Land Sheet.

So, some of this is just my lack of experience but sometimes it appears to be a problem with the settings.

I have no "Default Terrain Light" tool in my Overland SS1b style - no idea where yours is coming from. The contours getting placed on the LAND sheet is correct (sorry, I mixed up terrain and contour tools in my post above).

It looks like two terrain tools have a mistaken setting:
Terrain Default, Plains Light - goes on LAND* where it should be TERRAIN*
Terrain Default, Wasteland - goes on LAND* where it should be TERRAIN*

You can quickly fix these by changing the sheet name in the Properties section of the tools (from the Advanced tool dialog). I'll note these for fixing in the next update.
  • Thanks for the feedback Ralf! I've made the changes and everything is cool now.

    Thanks again.
