Printing out maps, 1 inch = 10 foot?

I've re-created the Temple of Elemental evil level 1 map and I'd like to print it out so that the map squares are 1 inch when printed out. I'm hoping there is a way to battle-map print out this thing and I'll tape the pages together.

Is there a FAQ for such a thing? I

In the print dialog just select "Scale Factor" and enter the values you've given above: 1" (paper distance) eqals 10' (drawing distance). And yes, you can simply enter the " and ' symbols.

Also, activate tiling and enter the number of pages you need to get your map printed completely.
  • I've tinkered with that but when I print preview it seems to want to print out the white space all around the map I am viewing. IS there a way to set the print area... or I guess set the "named view" area?

If you wish to print the entire map, make sure view to print is set to "everything" and NOT "active window". The former will print just your map, while the latter will print it with any whitespace currently visible in the view window.

To create a named view go to View - > Windows -> Name Window

Or if there is actually whitespace (a screen entity for example) around the map, zoom in exactly to what you want to print, then use "active window" for your print setting.

You might also have too many tiles for the size of your map. Reduce height and width by one page each and see whether the map still fits.
  • Odd, none of that seems to work. If I use the zoom tool to exactly the region I want and do a normal print preview (not trying to scale print) with active window it still shows the border and outside white space that were not in the zoom region. I did some test print to PDFs and it does indeed print just like the preview shows.

Save the map with the print settings and post it here. We'll take a look.
  • Here is what I've been tinkering with. I started over thinking perhaps I did something to cause this. This one is basic but has the rooms mostly walled and floored and it still prints the same way.

There are some really weird things going on with this map - and I'm not sure what's happening. Most of the time I can't see anything in the print preview at all.

But those are not the correct print settings, if you want the whole map. Are you sure you set them as you wanted?

Set the layout to "Portrait", scale as 1" paper to 10' drawing, and tile at least 4x4 pages. Do you get a proper print preview then?
  • Okay, few issues.

When I set the scale factor options to 1'' (paper distance) and to 10'' (Drawing distance) if I tab/select another option the paper distance of 1'' is reset to "0.08333" and the draw distance reset to "10.00000". Does it auto-calculate the settings and that's why it's reset to those values?

If I set scale factor active, print-preview seems to fail as you mentioned. I am trying a print to PDF now to see what happens. When I used fit to page the preview and print works.

Are the lines between pages part of the overlap? The print test I did (using the fit to page) had lines between pages that kinda mixed up the grid. If it's just a artifact of using fit to page print ignore this... assuming the scale factor option print works.
  • Follow up, the print with scale factor option enabled worked to PDF. It took a LONG time. I'm wondering if it's something I did with sheets option. I've turned off wall shadows and glow and that might have helped. This print option with 0% overlap didn't have the odd lines I mentioned above either.

The only question I had left was the bit about the scale factor options changing as I selected options.

Yes, CC3 will always calculate the value entered in the field. For a floorplan/battlemat level map, which is measured in feet, 1" is equal to 0.08333 (1/12), while 10' is, obviously, equal to 10.
