Inserting a scale bar

Apologies for what I'm sure is an newbie question, but I'm stumped as to how to insert a scale bar or a compass rose after I've begun my map (I didn't put them in when creating the map). Can somebody clue me in as to how to insert those symbols? Thanks!

    That depends a bit on what style you're working with. Most style should have scale bar and compass rose symbols included in the drawing. To access these, click the "drawing symbols" button above the catalog window (it's the left button below "Options").

    If that doesn't show appropriate symbols, you need to load a catalog with those symbols included. Click the button to the right of the one just mentioned and find a catalog called "Cartouches" or similar. These contain the scale bars and compass roses.
