Need help automating the mapping of large city

Hey there everyone. This is my first post but I'm a pretty long time CC2/CC3 user. I am in the process of building my biggest map ever. It is a city modeled after Rome. I have broken it down into several maps (districts of the city) but I still need some help automatically placing houses.

Are there any tools/macros/etc that will fill a selected area with random symbols from a symbol set (say a set of different house shapes) such that they are packed together (or provide for a user-settable distance apart?

Also, I want to use a background that looks like a parchment. Is there a way to use transparent gifs or other transparent symbols so that the background shows through?

Thanks!!

The best option for random houses is CD3's Random Street tool. From the options, you can set the allowed distance between the houses. If you wish them to be tightly packed, just set this really low.

For transparent symbols, you can use a transparency effect on the sheets that contains the symbols. This will allow you to control the amount of transparency precisely.
  • Hi!

I'm not used with using macros. If one can give me a macro as Aternoxx asked for, I'm bidder! I also try to draw very large cities and I want to make use of symbols and houses (I own CD3) but placing them one by one is quite time consuming... I don't want to go in the maths behind a random placement algorithm, but I could if no one give me advices ;)

I look forward to see this thread growing!

  • @Monson: Thanks for the response. I have been using the random street tool but I find it very limited as I cannot use symbols. I can only use the houses that it draws. That said, I can get close to what I want, but it doesn't look very professional.. At least not as professional as the symbol sets that I can create. I really haven't had any success with the transparency effect.

@Anoril: I agree! I would actually pay $50 for said macro! @Profantasy: Hint hint!
