How do I scale Terrain fills?

Hello, I am a registered CC3/DD3/CD3 user. I am trying to use the terrain feature for a map I am attempting to adapt from CC2 pro. My problem is I wish to scale the symbol fills. When drawn on the map using the terrain feature they appear minute, looking more like discolored blobs of dark color than pine forests. Is there a way I can scale the symbol fills so they appear larger? Any help would be appreciated.

    Yes.

Open the Fill Style Dialog (By clicking the FS indicator in the top right), then go to "Bitmap Files" and find the fill style you wish to modify. Near the bottom of the dialog, you should find an option for "Scaled", make sue it is checked, and input appropriate values as you need

Thank you for the reply. However, I was not precise enough with the description of the feature I am having difficulty with. It is one of the six default drawing tools in the upper left hand corner, the default terrain button, second row, beneath the default river button. In CC2 pro it would draw a forest complete with individual trees and a shaded area. It still does this, but the trees the program draws are tiny, the end result looks like a discolored blob as opposed to a forest. Adjusting the scale of the fill style the upper right hand corner has no effect on this drawing tool. Could you suggest something else?
  • You can edit the drawing tool and save it under a different name.

Ah, the forest drawing tool. It uses the default symbol scale to determine the size of the trees.

Go to File -> Drawing Properties and (temporarily) change the default symbol scale.
  • That solved the issue. Thank you very kindly for your responses. Peace.

    You're Welcome.

    Happy mapping :)

  • I have the same problem, but the solution does not seem to be working for me. It doesn't appear as though anything I do will change the scale of the forest. I'm using the BW Vector drawing template in CC3.

If I change the Default Symbols Scale, all it does is draw more or fewer trees. It doesn't actually change the size of the trees.

If I try and edit the properties of the fill, none of them appear to do anything. It's not actually clear to me what "width" does, as none of the different settings appears to produce a result and I'm not sure what the width is it's adjusting.

My goal is to have forests of different scale. I have one forest at the default map scale, and now I'd like to create several forests at a smaller scale.

Did a test with that map style, and it works perfectly drawing forests at different scales by changing the default symbol scale, so the method should work.
Do you have the latest patch installed (Update 10 -> CC3 v 3.42)

As for the width of the drawing tool, it should be left at 0. Any non-zero width creates hollow instead of filled polygons (Width is the size of the edge line)
  • I have no problems making forests of different scales. If I select a tree, and scale it down, every tree I place is at that scale.

It's the terrain fill tool that doesn't appear to work. If I then go to the terrain fill and select forest, it's the old scale and nothing I can do appears to change it. Default scale did nothing.

I'm running 3.41. Is this specifically a feature unique to 3.42?

If I have trees at a scale I like, what might cause the terrain fill to draw at any scale OTHER than that? Maybe that's the best way for me to attack this problem.
  • Here's another example I just discovered.

I go to make a Fractal Lake from the Overland menu.

The pen is way too thick. I have no idea what will make it thinner. If I increase the "sample width" and click Update, the line gets thinner (no idea why, I expect it would get thicker as width gets larger).

But while I can see the line get thinner in the sample window, when I then click "Ok" the lake I get is always the same thickness.

I should point out that this same technique does nothing to the trees, even in the preview window.

No, it shouldn't be specific to 3.42, but it is always best to run the latest version.

Changing the sample size won't affect the outcome of the drawing. The sample size is actually just the size of the drawing in the sample window. Increasing the sample size will make the border look thinner, because you increase the size of the object drawn in the sample window, and the border will then be a smaller size compared to the whole object. To change the width of the lake border, hit the "outline" button from the drawing tools window (advanced view), then change the line width of the extra entity.

As for the forest, I do not know what might be your problem. It works perfectly for me by changing the Default Scale in the Drawing Properties. You may wish to contact ProFantasy Tech Support if you cannot get it to work.
  • Ok, I think I got it figured out. I was changing the Drawing Units, not the Scale. >.<

Thanks for the help (and patience)!

Of course now I've got tiny trees in a *very sparse* forest, but I think I can figure out how to increase the density.
