addlight command

I have been trying to get the addlight command to work and when I get finished all that shows up is a black x where the light has been placed. What am I missing here? I am adding the map I am attempting to use this on for reference.

The black X is just a visual indication on where the light source is located, since it can be difficult to see otherwise. You can remove the black X'es by going to Lights -> Hide Light Symbols. This will hide the X'es, but not the lights itself.

Now. To get the lights to actually do anything, you need to set up a "Wall Shadow, Point Light Setup" effect on the first sheet that has entities that can block light from your light sources (Usually the "Walls") sheet.
Then, you need a "Wall Shadow, Point Light Finalize" on the last sheet that should be affected by your light source. Anything after this sheet aren't affected by lighting effects.
  • I do not have the lights menu, just access to the command line for lights. I understand you have to have one of the annuals for the lights menu.

That did do the trick though, adding those effects to a couple of sheets. I will have to play around with this some more to see what I can get out of it.

Looks like I definitely need the hide light symbols command (which I can't find) as the x's show up when I export the map to a png.

    Nevermind, found the command.
  • New issue, I am trying to print the map out as a battlemat but tiling it over several pages. The exported png looks fine, but when I tile it across several pages any page that doesn't have a light placed on it comes out completely black. In order to fix it I have to place lights everywhere, defeating the purpose of using the lights to add atmosphere in the first place.

That is unfortunately one of the problems with lights. When CC3 splits a drawing into multiple part, the light only appear on the same part as the light source is on.

One way to handle this is to export the map as an image, then use any image viewer to print the image. This is not the best workaround unfortunately, since you then need to handle splitting and correct scaling yourself. Also, once you go beyond a certain resolution, CC3 will need to split the image into parts when rendering it to an image as weel.
  • I was thinking that adding a layer of lights, say at every grid point, of low intensity might make this work out better. A macro to do something like that would be cool but I have not even touched on macros with this program yet and not sure if that is even possible. You would still lose the intensity from nearby lights when it was tiled over several pages but the page wouldn't wind up completely black at least. Then just make smaller areas of intense light instead of trying to make huge patches of light from the street lights I have placed.
  • I don't know if it's relevant to your case, but adding a transparency effect on the sheet you have Wall_Shadow,Point_Light_Finalize reduces the strength of the shadows, so you won't have full black...
  • That might help actually, I will give it a try.
