Symbol Scale (In Catalog)

I want to make a custom catalog of symbols. So I start with the Modern Mapping one. I delete the ones I don't want. No problems so far.

I open the catalog and go to symbol manager and select a symbol, renaming it to my needs. I also want to change the scale, so it's twice as big as the rest of the symbols in the catalog.

No matter what I do it wont change size in relation to the others when placed in a map. Obviously I can manually rescale it when inserting it, but then what is the "scale" button for in the symbol manager when editing a catalog for?

Thanks

This should work the way you describe. I did a few tests myself, and it works flawlessly.

Do you remember to save the catalog afterward? I tried loading the symbol catalog as a map, scaling one symbol using the scale button in the symbol manager, and then just saving the symbol catalog, as well as bringing up the symbol manager, scaling one of the symbols, selecting a couple of symbols, and using the "save as catalog" button. In both cases, the end result was that the scaled symbol was larger than the others when I inserted it later.

One thing you may wish to look out for though. If you try to insert a symbol into a map that already has a symbol definition by that name, it won't load the new (scaled) symbol definition from the symbol catalog, but will use the one already in the map. So make sure to try out your new symbol catalogs on a blank map, and not where you might have used that symbol before (Remember that the symbol definition does not get removed from the map even if you delete the last symbol of that type. To remove a definition from a map, use "Purge" in the symbol manager.
  • I am checking out the specifics. So far it is looking like the new scaled symbol was not loading because of the old ones in the map.

Appreciate the quick assist and I will check setting them to the proper size in a blank map and let you know if that cleared up my confusion.

    Thanks!

If you insert a symbol into a map which already has a symbol with the same name in it, it will use the definition is already has in the map rather than changing every single symbol in your map. It's best to give new symbols new names.
  • Thanks both of you.

I was trying to re-scale and re-insert symbols to check when I had made them big enough in relation to the others. No wonder they weren't changing.

    Doh....
