Texture Repetition - Handling obvious texture tiling

Hello,

It is no surprise that a lot of textures repeat themselves to fill the space you define for them.
Usually, there is no issue with this but specifically for water it is very apparent.
Attached is a picture of 3 different layers of water using 3 different water textures (light medium and dirty(sp?)).
Despite these differences the texture repetition is painfully obvious.
How does one handle this? Is there some blur effect I can apply, or maybe some sort of offset somewhere?

Thanks!
B

One way is to chage the scale factor of the fill. Click the Fill Style indicator to the top left to bring up the fill style box, select "Bitmap Files", then select the deired fill style from the drop-down (Note that the fill style doesn't necessarily have the same name as the drawing tool). No, make sure "Scaled" is checked, then input some appropriate values (Experimentation is generally the best way to go here). Increasing the values used here means that the bitmap is more stretched out, so it soesn't have to repeat itself as often. Too high a value, and it will hurt the quality, but generally, you can find a good value that gives both ok quality and less obvious repeating.

You can also use a blur effect (regular sheet effect, apply it to the sheet your water is on). It will help soften the image and make repeats less obvious, and can be used along with the scaling method above for best result.
  • Another technique, one that we used a lot in CC2, is to put one texture on top of another. Just make sure that the upper texture has some transparency and the bottom pattern is pretty big (so there is little or no tiling). The bottom texture can give just enough color and pattern variance to fool the eye into ignoring the tiling in the top pattern.
