spurious Layer Dialog prompt?

I have hit this problem a couple of times and I can't seem to find a consistent fix. When I select Erase (ERA), I get the layer dialog prompt (for reasons I cannot fathom). Once I select a layer, the command stops... If I click again, I get layer dialog again. It's a weird and annoying thing that means I can't really edit my map.

You have changed the selection method of the program. This often happens if a macro crashes half way through.

It is easy to fix. Either type SELBYD on the command line of CC3, or go to tools -> options -> Select Method -> Dialog or Popup
