FT with smaller mountain ranges and more deserts

While I'm very green to Fractal Terrains, I'm quite sure I want to use it to create my fantasy campaign. I'm playing around with random world generation, and I seem to have the land mass, percent ocean, and roughness where I like; the problem is that I would like the program to generate smaller mountain ranges on each landmass and more desert terrain in the equatorial region.

Is there some way I can influence the random generation of terrain to cause these things to occur?

Thanks!

Due to artifacts present in FT's generation algorithm, making smaller mountain ranges also makes smaller continents. The only way to generate more deserts in FT are to reduce the rainfall and/or increase the temperatures. However, due to FT's lack of wind and ocean current modeling, deserts will not necessarily appear in the types of places that we might expect here on Earth.
