AuS File Extensions?

Another new guy question unfortunately.

I've found several symbol sets that are in an ".AuS" format and for the life of me i cannot figure out how to import them into C3. There are some really need looking symbol sets here, but they don't do me any good if i can't get CC3 to recognize them. Any ideas or are these in a format for another type of software?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

  • AuS format is native to the AutoREALM mapping program and not recognized in CC3 or any other program that I know of where they can be exported into another format (like PNG) usable in CC3. I haven't seen any conversions out there either.

Thanks for the info jaerdaph. Too bad i can't export them and use them, because there are some really nice symbols in there i would love to use. Since i can't draw a straight line without help, i shudder to think what my own symbols would look like :-).
  • I don't know a lot about AutoREALM, but perhaps someone more familiar knows if it would be possible in AutoREALM to place the symbols and then export them individually while "zoomed in" from AutoREALM as BMP, PNG or JPG files? If so, you could theoretically create your own CC3 symbol catalog from the exports of the individual symbol image files with some post-work (cropping, add alpha transparencies etc. for example) and convert to an image file format CC3 uses (BMP or PNG) if necessary in another graphics program like Fireworks or GIMP.

This should certainly be possible, but it has a few downsides:
    - It is lot of manual work, and the transparency can be tricky to get right
    - The original symbols are in a vector format. Doing it this way means you end up with a raster image (While raster images will usually be prettier than vector graphics, directly converting a vector image to raster looses the advantages of vector, without adding anything)

However, for just a few images, this is an ok way to do it.

One thing to keep in mind though, read the licence agreement of both the software (AutoRealm) and for the symbol set (if any), to make sure this is within acceptable usage for their symbols.
  • Monsen and jaerdaph,

Thanks very much for the input. I'm not sure my graphical arts skills are quite up to some of the tasks you are talking about doing, but i'll look into it. The license agreement is an excellent point that i had not considered, and i wouldn't want to cause any issues with the original owners of the symbols. I found the one i wanted, i think, i just can't get it into CC3.

Funny thing is, what i originally was looking for (and still can't find) is a bitmap, or filled bitmap, symbol for wetlands. I'll see what i can come up with.

Thank you again for all your help and have a great day.

Not sure if this will help or is exactly what you are looking for, but on the Bat in the Attic blog page, on the right side bar under Digging in the Boxes is a collection of links to zip files of Old School Mapping Textures by John Cooper including Woods, Light Woods, Mountain, Rough (hills), and Swamp. They are black and white seamless TIF files but they can easily be converted to PNG or BMP format. Here's the link: http://batintheattic.blogspot.com
  • jaerdaph,

That's just the ticket i was looking for. Thank you so much for finding that!

I've figured out how to convert it to a PNG and it looks great in b&w. I actually copied all of the ones from that website, since they all looked good and i think i can get some use out of them.

Which brings me to a new question. Can varicolor be added to existing PNG's in CC3 or do i need to figure out a way to do that in Paint?
  • PNG varicolor symbols are possible in CC3, although I have never created any myself. Here's the article in CC3 Help Online that discusses creating varicolor PNG symbols: http://www.profantasy.com/cchelp/varicolor_png_symbols.htm Note that making PNG varicolor symbols requires knowledge and use of a graphics program like Paint Shop Pro, GIMP, PhotoShop etc.
