Rivers Through Forests

I am using CC3. I want a river to run through a dense forest. By default, the river sheet will be placed below the forest sheet (see below). Although it is not as realistic, I would like the river to show on top of the forest (more like a top-down view would show). I used the entity order tools to bring the river in front of the forest and that works, but as soon as I zoom out or start to do other things, it moves behind the forest again. How do I force it to stay on top of the forest?

  • This probably isn't the answer you want to hear, as it will take some time to get it right, but the best solution is probably to delete the trees that obscure the river. This will give the landscape a more natural flow.

Yes, you are correct. The other issue is, though, that the forest fill uses the large groups of trees, so I would have to delete a much larger section than necessary, and then go back and add smaller groups (or single trees) to bring the forest back closer to the river banks. Also can't see the river for the trees when deleting ;-)

I am still curious, however, as to why my reordering of the entities does not work as expected.
  • Everything is drawn in sheet order. Normally the sheet the rivers is on is drawn first and then the sheet that the forest is on is drawn later. By changing the order of the sheets, you can change what is on top. I suspect, though, that if you change the order so that rivers are drawn on top of the forest, you will not like the results.

A better option would be to delete the existing forest and create two new forests, one on each side of the river.
  • The reordering of entities applys per sheet. Because the forest is on a different sheet, it won't affect the river placement. The change 'appears' to work until something (like zoom) causes the map to redraw.

What I do in these instances is start with the river, then draw the forest in 2 pieces: one north of the river, the other on the south edge.
  • The answers here are much appreciated. I think I will simply redraw the forest as two fills around the river as suggested. Thanks again!
  • May be i don't understand your problem, but i think it's a good idea to use Vegetation simbols instead fearsome defult terrian.
