Oh gawd I have to relearn everything

So in the last year I started going back to school at the ripe old age of *censored*. That took all my free time away from CC3. Then I had a hard drive crash. Then two months later I had another hard drive crash.

So I just spent the last two hours reinstalling CC3, the add-on's, and FTPro.

I've forgotten how to do most of the stuff I was doing! I also lost all of my previous files so I can not reverse engineer them.

So I would like to use this to ask general questions in hopes of remembering how to do some of the things I was doing before.

First Question: How to make a Hex shaped template

I want to make two types of Hex templates (which I used to be able to do, but now I can't remember). The first is for my GURPS dungeons and the second a smaller hex for Games Workshops Mighty Empires and Planetstike. I want to be able to print these so they are 6mm from one flat side to the opposite side. So I need to make about 6 per page. I will be adding tabs on them to link them together. I will keep adding on my questions to this.

Thanks in advance!

The command HEXGRID (type it in when you have a map up, blank or otherwise) will let you add a grid to your map, either square or hex, and of whatever hex size you need. After that's done, if you need to be able to orient your work to the grid, right-click on the Grid button (lower right) and then create a new grid snap setup. You want the origin of the grid snap to be equal to 1/2 the height and width of one hex (otherwise it gets offset).

I love hexgrid maps - the only problem is that you hardly ever see them anymore - even on the new "pen and paper" games coming out from the specialty shops. It's either sqaure grid (even for outdoor maps), or no grids at all. We need a hex grid rennescance. Been using the old AKS hexmapper utility for hex maps rather than CC2 / CC3 because the AKS stuff looks more like the classic D&D Gazeteer style fare - very reminiscent of the more artsy antique modules. Wasn't a player but I use to be mad for collecting. Lost it's original mood and flavor after the Wizards / TSR buyout. Shame - Gygax was a pioneer.
  • I am a BIG fan of the Hex. It is one of the things that drew me to GURPS. Plus Planetstrike and Mighty Empires uses hexes and the new Civilization V is now using Hexes (for the first time!) instead of squares.

I hope to show you lots of Sci-Fi and Fantasy Hex goodness in the upcoming months.
  • For some of my world maps, as places some characters on my starship site are from, are done using the hexagon surface maps from Cosmo Pro.
  • If you are a fan of the old Hexmapper software, you might want to take a look at Hexographer. There is a free version and a pay version.
