Do you know the NOTES command?

Everyone,

I know that CC3 is such a vast program that there are very few individuals that know most of the commands (I do NOT place myself in this category). In searching for some suitable topic to write about for my next CC3-Developer’s blog post, I stumbled upon the “Notes” command.

- Have you ever wanted to add text to the map? Use the notes command.
- Keep game related info with the map? Use the notes command.

I can actually see quite a bit of use for the notes command, especially since I have not been able to view the data inside a note with the “List” command.

- Imagine if someone were to save HTML inside a note, it would be cool to be able to render that HTML with an XP command.
- My WikiNotes XP stores the RTF code in an XML file right now. I think I should alter it to save the RTF code in a note inside the map. That way no external file would be needed.
- How about an entire Word document inside the map!

The possibilities are endless.

So … have you used the notes command? If so, to store what?

  • I use notes all the time in my maps to remember little things like bitmap export settings/dimensions, symbol sizes (if I use more than one symbol size in a map), color numbers I'm using, sheets/layers I'm drawing certain things on, reminders to hide certain sheets or layers before I export/print etc.

In addition to typing NOTES at the command prompt, you can also click the Map Notes button on the File Toolbar.

Notes are quite helpful for storing map data.

I am wondering though, is there a command for opening a single note directly, so you can for example embed it in a hotspot?
  • That would be an interesting XP command to write! I think I'll add that to the list.

Sorry.. I seem to have a bad habit of finding old stuff to comment on.

I'm using notes to write room descriptions, adventure introductions... anything I might want to have with the map. I don't want to switch between two or three programs when I'm running an adventure, and it seems to me that having a separate file for the descriptions and the map would be a good way to lose one, or to get the wrong files associated.

Did anything ever come of this idea? It sounds like a great idea to me.

I was also wondering if there is a limit to note size. Does anyone know?

I use notes all the time in my CC3 maps to store information like colors I've used, symbol sizes (if I vary the size of symbols in the map), layers or sheets I have to hide or show to get certain views, that sort of thing.

Edit: And apparently I'm a victim of threadcromancy - I already said that two years ago. :)
