Setting the right scale to trace a map

HI All

I found my old notes on how to scale a map so that what you trace over the top is set to the right scale, but for some reason I cannot get it to work in CC3. IN CC2 you used to be able to measure the distance (in this case its the bar from Rescue and Rivenroar - scales of war adventure) and CC3 tells me its 7' 4" so you could hit the scale button, type in 7'4"/5' and it would scale it so it the same distance became 5' now. But for some reason when I am imputting this nothing changes. I guess I'm missing something rather than something is wrong. Anyone got a clue?

Thanks

  • Can you advise as to how you did this - totally new to CC3 (or any other CC program) and I'm toying with the idea of tracing something from an atlas and duplicating it in CC3, just to test the skillset and see how the two compare.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Sorry its taken me so long to answer but basically you thrown in the map you want to trace, onto an appropriately sized template. Put it on a layer you won't touch, I call mine trace. And then I try to size it by sight to the right size. I then use the distance measuring tool to measure what is supposed to be the scale on the map. This gives you what CC3 actually makes the scale at the size you've made it by hand. Then you go over to the scale icon and right click it to bring up the context menu and go for non visual scalling. From here you can write in the command line the actual scale it is and then put in / for divide by the scale you want. Now I might have got that last part wrong and you might need to have those two numbers around the other way, but basically when you hit enter it should up or down scale it so that 5' on the map = 5' within CC3 or whatever scale you're looking for.

Hope that helps - sorry its not that clear, I kind of had to go back to what I did before and its a bit hazy as I don't trace maps very often.

  • Early and my eyes aren't working exactly yet. So I'll just say how I do it.

I determine the size of the bmp/png I am going to import to trace over.

If I don't know, I make an educated guess. I'll look at the png and decide it is 150 miles by 200 miles. ( On my old 5mm hexagon maps, I scanned in, I know what milage each hexagon was, and used that to determine what distances to use for the map size.)

I open CC3 and look for, or modify, a template so the map border is 150 x 200 miles.

I go to layers and add a layer called bmp.

I save as often. i.e. filename001, work a few minutes, save as filename002, etc.

Import the file, and use the insert to match lower left corner, 0,0, then hold down the shoft key drag the mouse up to the upper right corner. Click and set that to that point.

The bmp/png is now in the map.

    I start drawing over it.

When done, I hide freeze all layers except the one that has the bmp/png, and delete it.

    Save as the new map.

Save as png, put the png and zipped map on my web site.

Here is a link to my tutorial pages which go into more detail.
  • Thanks very much for this advice - going to have a pop at this tonight I hope!
