Tiled Printing question

I am having a problem. I am trying to print a map (115' x 115') as a battle map where 1"=5' on regular 8.5 x 11 paper. But I don't know how to calculate the tiling for it. I also don't know if I should be using landscape or Portrait (though I doubt it matter is this since it is a square map).

There's not much to calculate, CC3 can do most things for you. Just type 1" in the paper distance box (in the print dialog) and 5' in the drawing distance. That already gives you the correct scaling.

For the number if pages necessary, you can simply set a tiling of 2 by 2 pages, check the preview, and adjust the tiling from there until your whole map is visible.

Or you can do a little math: 115' divided by 5' is 23. So you need 23" in both directions on paper. At 8.5" by 11" that's 3 pages in both directions to fit everything. If you can cut off just a little on one side, 3x2 would be enough.

    Hope that helps.

One more stupid question. Originally I put it 1 =5 and it didn't work correctly, I then changed it to 1" = 5' and cc3 changed it after preview to 0.08333 = 5.0 after I previewed it. What does it normally measure it in?

    In feet.
    One foot = 12 inches so 1" = 1/12' and 1/12 roughly equals 0.08333.
Your *real* scale is 1:60 so typing 1 and 60 should be ok too.

Ahh, ok, that makes sense. I thought at first it was measuring in meters, but the math didn't work out
  • Well, feet are the default units that are used if you don't specify any. If you need the scale by meters you must just add 'm'.
However a scale of 1' for 60' or 1m for 60m is still the same 1:60.
In 1" to 5' the scale is not 1:5 because the units are not the same but CC3 converts anything in feet provided you specified the unit.

    Hope it makes sense...
