City designer and hills

Greetings all

I m a new user of CC3 and it's quite hard to master.

Right now i have a problem with City Designer.
My city is supposed to have hills. I ve found nothing explicit to make them.

How can i make them appear and look nice ?

i thank you

  • There are probably other people with better answers, but here is a basic attempt at a hill I did some time ago - http://www.fantasymapmaker.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/lindhurst.jpg.

The real difficulty is if you want to have multiple levels with buildings, like maybe a city that winds down the side of a cliff around a waterfall. There is nothing native in CC3 to handle that (that I know of). You would need to do a lot of customization like reducing symbol sizes at lower levels, fading colors, etc. in order to get the effect you want. CC3's sheets would make the project doable, but it’s definitely not something you could whip up in just an hour or two.

All that being said, I'm not aware of any mapping software that makes this process easy, so it's just a matter of experimentation and practice.

It's always a bit difficult to depict elevation on a 2d city map. I usually use lighter shades of the background fill to show elevated areas.

E.g. for the CD3 Bitmap A style, make the backround fill "CD3A_Grass3", and then use the "Terrain, City Contour 1" (and 2) drawing tools to depict higher areas withing the city.

    Hope that helps.

I use sheets and layers for contours this way.

All contours go on sheet Contours (land). I then go into the layer requestor and create height named layers.

I use color gradiations to denote height.

So the bottom layer, drawn first, would be dark green, next would be medium green, etc.

Although a bit complicated for a new user, I have a template and some bitmap fills on: color chart for surface maps updated link Nov 7, 2016.

    I hope that helps.
