How do you assemble slices of USGS Data into a full globe?

I am trying out Fractal Terraines Demo and I can't figure out how to add more than one slice of USGS Data.

It's much simpler to use a full-scale data set such as the ETOPO2 data set than it is to try to use smaller pieces and put them together. FT unfortunately will only read a single file at a time (maximum size on the order of 1GB).

ETOPO2 can be obtained from http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/fliers/01mgg04.html if you'd like to try that.
