Editing size and shape of landmasses

I have gone through the editing section of the cc3 users manual a few times and cannot figure out how to alter landmasses to change shape and size. Every time I try using the node buttons, it just makes my landmass look like a shot gun blew out the side of it or it adds a section of land but the black border does not adjust around it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    You can use the "e"dit function of the drawing tools to edit your landmasses. Just start the same drawing tool you drew the landmass with, then press the "e" key (it tells you so in the command line). Now you can pick a starting node for your edit, and draw the new coastline. Right-click and pick an end node to finish.
