Old Paper Style Background

I want to create a map with a background and style that is reminiscent of "classic" pirate maps. (X marks the spot kind of thing).
I tried creating an overland map with the "Coarse Paper Yellow", but this just results in a bunch of red "x"'s on the background.

Does anyone have a tip for doing this? I wanted to use the hand drawn symbols. (Which is further a problem, as I can't even select Coarse Paper Yellow with the Hand Drawn Overland map type).

Any idea how to draw a dotted line (to represent a curving path)?

Any advice?

  • For the background, there are some pretty cheap "Templates" at rpgnow.com that have interesting paper textures. You can import that as a bitmap into CC3.

For the lines, IME, just using one of the dashed line styles (I like ecw-2) with a fractal path work pretty well on hand-drawn maps, if the rest of the map is built from hand-drawn symbols. Use a Solid fill and a nonzero width.
  • Maybe you should take a look at the annual's first volume, the June issue dealt with paper and parchment backgrounds.

You could do a Google image search for some old parchment and paper and maybe find something you like. You will need to convert it into BMP or PNG format first (if it isn't one of those already) before you use it in CC3. If also helps if the image is tileable/seamless.

Then you could create your own bitmap fill style in CC3 based on the image.

Here is a simply parchment background for the Handdrawn style. Copy the included png file into CC3/Bitmaps/Tiles/ and then start a map based on the included template.
