Making wider roads

I have just bought CC3 and am trying to make an historical map. I have followed the tutorials and read the manual, but I can not find any way to make the roads wider. At present I can only do the dotted lines available using the default road option.

I want to be able to make a map similar to a road map of say 1:50,000. These typically have roads with a double line and a colour inbetwen, either red, yellow or white.

Can anyone advise me how I can create this with CC3?

thanks

Paul

You can make your own custom drawing tools for this.

Here are the basic steps, but you may wish to experiment to get this the way you want.

    1. Right click on the road button
    2. Click "Advanced"
    3. Select the Road, default in the list
    4. Click "New". This will create a copy of the currently selected tool. Give it a name that starts with "Road, ", like the other roads in the list
    5. To create the double line you wanted, using an outline is a good option. Make sure your new tool is selected, then click the "outline" button. For a thin outline, you can use a color (uncheck the "use current color", and select an appropriate color), but for more control, tell it to use a seperate entity, and hit the properties button. Now, to use a plain color, select the color, and make sure the fill style is set to solid. To use a bitmap, select the appropriate fill style from the list instead. Also set an appropriate width for the outline. Note that if you make it too large, it can cover up the road itself, so you may need to experiment.
    6. Ok, ok, ok
    7. Draw.

Now, the road tool will be available to select each time you right click on the road button, so you only need to do the above steps once, except if you switch to another drawing style (each style has its own set of drawing tools)

    Hi Monsen

Thanks very much for your reply. I will play around with it and come back if I have any problems.

    Hi Monsen

I have changed the colour and the width, but the road is still a series of blocks rather than a continuous line.

I have changed it to solid, but it then looks like series of blocks joined together, but you can see the join - if you see what I mean?

How can I make it a smooth contineous line?

Have you made sure that the line style of both the road and the outline (if you use an extra entity) is set to solid in the drawing tool? These can be configured individually, so it is easy to forget one of them. It is also important that the fill style for both is "solid"

    Hi Monsen

I got it now. Thanks very much for your help.

  • Hmm... I use line style 'road long dash' and set the width in the line width section. That is for overland.

For city I use: a solid line, brown or black, line width of what ever I want that area to have. 5 feet, 10 feet, etc. Then I use 'smooth path' to draw it.

You could make canals using the same method, just pick a medium blue or a blue bitmap fill for the water.
