How do you use Symbol Sets?

I picked up SS1 (from my local game store) and SS2 via download.

SS1 doesn't have a pdf view on the purchased disk... is it possible to see a pdf view?

When I create a new map from template, SS1 Handdrawn 1000X800... everything seems to work.

When I pick Minerals\Mountains, I see;
CC3 Filled Mountains
CC3B Mountains
CC3C Mountains

These are all the same symbol sets I saw when I put in patch 8. So where are the new symbols? Should I reinstall?

So... I'm runing XP SP3 fully patched. I installed (in this order CC3 DD3 Patch8 RandomDungeonPatch SS1 SS2 ImageMagicPatch)

A symbol menu showing two Hand drawn symbols did appear once... after I aborted an import symbols, and followed the steps above. I cannot repeat this.

SS2 seems to be working. I see lots of new symbols.

When I downloaded I saw a cryptic sentence, "Universal Update (Reduced) (20Mb). If you are installing add-ons for CC2-Pro (not CC3!) you must run this Universal Update after the whole installation to complete the process."

Am I supposed to run this 'universal update'. and if so are there any instructions?

  • SS1 symbols don't have icons in CC3. You just import them.

On the left side, above the symbols, you see two icons. One green and one looksl ike a beige envelope. Click on the beige envelope. Browse to the symbols you want to use. Click on the name of the symbol set. Then click on open. Now you can select icons to place into CC3.
  • Oh, the Universal Update is NOT for CC3.

    Hi there,

you might have purchased an old (CC2) version of the Symbol Set 1. The universal update is for CC2 and CC2 Pro only, not for CC3. Please contact me off-list (ralf@profantasy.com) with your SS1 serial number and a proof-of-purchase from your game store, and we'll set you up with a SS1 for CC3.
  • This is SS1 CC3... (The store in question does have lots of old stuff though.)

Hmm... the SS1 readme doesn't mention importing.

When in overland mode, right click the "Symbol Style Toggle" image button, select "Master Filter Setting", then select either ss1a or ss1b. The various catalog buttons at the top will now load the appropriate SS1 catalogs when you click on them, instead of the standard CC3 ones.
If you start a new map using a SS1 template, this should be set automatically.
To start a new map using an SS1 template, Just create a new overland map using the new map wizard. There should be various options here labeled "SS1 map type".

If this isn't available, try to reinstall both SS1 and Update 8.
