Map will not render as an image file (PNG, JPG, BMP)

I have a map - an old one I did about seven years ago - that simply won't render as an image file.

The black screen full of text comes up, but is too fast to read, and at the end there's no image file.

Windows Explorer suggests to me the file might be being instantly deleted.

I've tried copying everything to a new map. Doesn't fix it.

Anybody got any ideas?

As I no longer seem to be able to directly print maps (I don't know why but that doesn't really worry me) I generally save them as images in order to print those. I'm hoping I can save this map. It's not a huge piece of work compared to some I do, but I do want it :)

Please can you upload the .fcw file so others can have a go at rendering it to an image file?

  • Sorry - I uploaded the wrong file and in trying to fix that I may have also deleted a response.

    Thank you :)

I think they both have at least this one thing in common.

The only entity on the MAP BORDER layer is a single vertical line on the right side of the Ground Floor map.

I had the same export to image problem as you did until I deleted that line. Then I got this. Looks like I don't have the font you used, so it's defaulting to some kind of system font.

These are the export settings I used, if you are interested.

I recommend you delete that one line on the MAP BORDER layer and try one of the rectangular image export types, so you can define the area you want exported by clicking the corners of that area. If you show the snap grid and activate SNAP you will then be able to reliably export the same area again if you wish.

Here is your second map with that line deleted.

    Thank you!

Yes, deleting that one line has fixed the problem. The map has rendered.

    Thanks very much.

    Thank you :)

I have a semi standard list of things to check. It may or may not be helpful for others. The order in which I do things depends on what's going wrong.

    • What's on the MAP BORDER layer (there should only ever be a rectangle around the outside edge of the map), and does it accurately follow the outside edge of the map.
    • Is the MERGE layer hidden, and is there anything on it (there shouldn't be). The MERGE layer should never be active or hidden.
    • Are there any hidden or frozen layers/sheets, and what order are the sheets in.

I use Info a lot to find out what sheet and layer things are on and how many nodes they have or if there are identical duplicates, and I sometimes do really strange things like zoom to extents and pretend to delete everything just to find that symbol or node that is a million miles outside the map and causing zoom to extents problems.

There are a lot more things I do, but most common problems show up by the time I've done these few things.

  • Yea I love to do zoom to extents. I think it's my most used command/button.

Over the years I always look to Hidden and Frozen stuff.

Only recently have I started to use the info list for additional information.

I wish there was a command where you can be on zoomed to extents, then it automatically turns each sheet on then off in order. I do that so much to keep my mind fresh on what is on each and every sheet.

You can do that manually by zooming to extents, hiding all but the BACKGROUND sheet, using the Auto hide all sheets except current and COMMON,

and using the Next Sheet option in the right click menu of the Sheets and Effects button. It's a bit awkard since moving to the next sheet requires 2 clicks. I don't know if there's a keyboard shortcut.
