OSR Dungeons - The Goblin Outpost and the Lost Tomb

Inspired by today's Live tutorial, here's my quickie dungeon map, old school style. I decided to add gridlines and remove the transparency effect from the grid sheet so the grid would stand out prominently, as if I drew the map on graph paper.

Some goblins have set up an outpost in some caves located near the ruins of an ancient temple for a long-forgotten civilization. Unfortunately, the goblins seem to have accidentally poked their way into a forgotten crypt, disturbing a long-slumbering occupant who isn't particularly happy with its new neighbors.

  • Pretty cool.

I really liked the fragmented walls, but could not find anywhere where they made sense. Glad you made use of them.

Same with the vegetation, since my map was indoor.

  • Fragmented walls are - as shown - for surface ruins, although you could use them for a partially collapsed underground area too. The symbols in this OSR style can be as versatile as you make them, mostly because they're not always obvious as to what they're meant to be (name-labels notwithstanding!).

  • Yeah, when I saw the ruined walls, I knew I had to include an outside area to my map, with the hatching used to show the mountain interior and cave walls. Not the first time I've done a map with temple ruins outside and an underground lair inside.

Necessity is the mother of invention! I love figuring out how to repurpose existing symbols to fit my need. It can even work sometimes when the symbols aren't so abstract. I'm currently working on a city map where I used one of the City Domes symbols with different XY values to create an oval for the top-down view of a dirigible (placed on a sheet with a drop shadow effect, of course).
