Deleting/re-sizing symbols on the map

Ok, I am having a real annoying time trying to delete or re-size symbols... I select the lair "symbols" and when I go to select, my land mass is still being selected so I end up deleteting or rescaling the land along with the symbol. I have to try half a dozen times sometimes to just get the symbol selected without the land, despite the fact I am on the symbol layer

    FREEZE all other layers before selecting the symbol, or use "Select By Layer" with the "Combine" options. All the selection options are available by right-clicking when your are selecting.

    Alternatively you can open the Symbol Manager and delete or resize a symbol, but note that that will resize all the symbols of that type in the map.
