Help with Fonts

So, i had gotten a new PC a few years ago due to a motherboard loss. I had TONS of free fonts downloaded on my old PC - hundreds. Some for mapping purposes, some for making master 3d printed dice for my dice making side gig....

I've got maps that i made with specific fonts that i no longer have on my PC, so obviously the maps reverted back to standard Calligraphic font. Is there a way to find out what font was originally saved on the file so I can reinstall the original fonts used?

I think if you use List from the Info menu it should tell you what the font is supposed to be.

I can't test it myself because I'm not entirely sure how to temporarily uninstall a font without accidentally deleting it.

  • Nope. If i List on any text it only shows the current font, which is the Calligraphic, what it reverts to when the font is no longer downloaded on the PC 😭

List should provide you with the actual font used. CC3+ uses Arial as a replacement font, so if it shows Calligraphic, that's the actual font used.

See here for an example from my own system where I am missing the font used in the map:

As you can see, it correctly identifies it even if it is displayed using Arial.

There is also another way to see what fonts are defined in a map though, just hit Text Specs, the dialog shows all the font referenced from the map. You can't see what font is used for what text from here, and it shows all the fonts defined in the map, which doesn't mean you have actually used them, but it should be enough to help.

  • Ok thanks. That's what i need to see what fonts i used....as i have opened and resaved the map many times with the Calligraphic font over and over so Listing would show that font now, right? I don't know why my map is on that font if it's not the default.....I would NEVER use it....it's just too basic for me, lol.

Let me try Text Specs and see where that gets me. Thanks you two, you're the best!!

No, opening and saving doesn't matter. CC3+ doesn't care if you work on a map with a font that currently isn't installed. The text entity will still remember what font it was defined with originally (or changed to if you use change properties on the entity, obviously). But the visual replacement font is just a visual thing when it can't find the font, and it will display the text using Arial instead of the actual font.

Are you sure that that Calligraphic font isn't what you are after? If you don't have it installed, maps will show using Arial, like in my screenshot above, but CC3+ will still list it as the actual font. (Just as in my example above, the text is clearly plain arial, but listed as XXII Arabian-Onenightstand, a font I don't currently have installed, which makes it look very plain indeed until you consider that isn't the font used in the display because I don't have it)

  • Ohhhhhhhh. Yup, that must be it. I'm so dumb. Okay, now to search for Calligraphic 🤣

If you have your old drive (you said it was a motherboard issue, so I would assume you do), all your old font files are safely tucked away on x:\windows\fonts on the old drive (where X is whatever drive letter it might end up with) and can just drag them into the fonts folder on the new PC.
