work goes apace

Well, probably boring to most folks, but I have only 39 of the 70 columns of surface maps left to correct, fix, update, etc.

Of the world all maps on my site, 1 through 6 are done as above on the columns. That leaves world all maps 7 through 14 to fix left.

Whew. Anyway.

When I get all of this done, I will start working on trade routes and probably migration routes as well.

Not sure how much longer it will take, 4 columns of surface maps the past 2 days, 1 last weekend. So I am not going to predict how much longer this will take. Hopefully all of the above will be done before year end.

Thanks to anyone who stops by my web site. Crestar

I had to take the comment form mail off my site due to the spammers.

Sounds like you still have some work ahead of you :)
  • Yeah, months worth. But I will keep going at it. I hadn't realized some of the surface maps and pages I had done were in such a mess. I decided the best way to fix it would be create a spreadsheet of things to check, and start in column 1 and move along one column at a time.

I will probably take a few breaks in there and start adding detail to towns, etc.

  • Well, I asked at the movable type forums for some help so I could make changes to my Crestar site and make it easier for you all to find things, fix it so the maps don't get clipped, show all 11 of my faq static pages, etc. No help. i am not going to pay $100 a year to get paid help there. Good grief !

So I am changing over to another blog/cms called textpattern. Seems much easier to work with. Sigh, but the importer didn't copy all categories nor all entries/articles over. So I have to retype categories into the blog and copy paste the entries.

Going to take me a long while I suppose. This means a temporary suspension of fixing the surface map urls and maps.

My apologies for making you folks wait even longer, but I think the end result will be a much improved site.

Wonderful help on the textpattern forums. I have the category listing problem solved. Some links are correct, some not.

If you want to look over the new site it is at: Crestar new site same sub-domain. updated link on Nov 7, 2016.
  • Looking good, Jim!

I did notice that on this page, the maps don't show up to much further down the window below the right side navigation bar (there's a huge "white space" in between, at least for me in Firefox 3.5.7.

  • Ah. I'm not sure what is causing that. I know the original width of this cms/blog was 750 pixels. I'll check and see if the archive pages are set to 1024 pixels, which is what I wanted to expand them to.

Aha ! Adjusing the css fixed it. I'll tweek it a bit, too much blank space between the center and the right sidebar.

    Edit:

    All done.

Oh, site loads slow for some reason, about 7 to 9 seconds per page. Attempting to find out why. My other sites at the same domain load quickly. Crestar does have a large number of categories though...

  • Okay. Evidently category listing support in Textpattern isn't very good.

So I have implemented the twinhelix.com menu I use on other parts of the site. Load time for a page has dropped from 10-14 seconds to 0.57 seconds.

About 200 pages with static urls I have to check left to go. Obviously urls have changed on my site.

Any urls in here with 'crest_of_a_star/year number/month number' are now 'crestar/articles' and the .html is gone from the end of the link.

The link to the new blog is at: http://crestofastar.drivein-jim.net/crestar updated Nov 7, 2016.

I suggest using the menu bar on the site for site navigation.
  • Almost forgot.

All urls in my textpattern cms/blog have been corrected to only lead to the new cms/blog. No more Movable Type blog on that site.

Textpattern doesn't handle categories very well, so there is no long category list on the sidebar. But I do have the posts in a database list of categories. Several plugin authors for Textpattern have posted they are working on faster category plugins. Time will tell.

I'll go over my links here, and correct them. Lots of typing at work this past week, so my fnigers hurt. It will take me a bit of work to fix my urls here, but its only fair I do so.

I'll post in this thread when I have fixed them.

Sigh. Okay. I mistyped static urls on about 300 pages. I typed 'archives' when I should have typed 'articles'.

I am working on it, so in the mean time if you try a page on my site and you get a 404, look at the url and change that one word. Hopefully it will then work for you.

If not, please let me know.

    Thanks.
  • I have, I think, corrected all 92 of my posts here and now they have the correct urls. I found and corrected my Movable Type and Wordpress blog urls here to the pages now on my Textpattern site.

My hands hurt, lots of typing at work this past week, so I think I will get out of the house and take a break from typing.

Sorry, I have to take a break.

    Later.
  • Well, late Saturday evening. I fixed the links. Textpattern doesn't have a search and replace, so I did it by editing each page/article. As far as I can tell, everything should be okay now.

If you go there and spot a problem, please let me know here.

Oh, I realize the central area of the blog seems to have a dynamic width and therefore maps and text sometimes show up further down the page than they should.

    Thanks for your help.
