You can use symbols in area - which i use a lot - you just have to fiddle with the parameters. one thing I have noted is to make sure the default symbol size is appropriate for the map - and it often is not what is set, so you may have to alter that. Furthermore, you can pick from a variety of trees - and even make your own symbol catalogue by renaming some symbols (clone them first) so they have the same name with ascending numbers.
And it is very quick and easy once you get the settings right.
If you want ideas on how to map huge areas of forest you could try watching the last few Live Mapping sessions, where Ralf has very nearly completed his Mirkwood map. That's really dense forest as well.
The very general idea is to add the large are in patches and add little features such as thinly covered hills or larger than average trees here and there. Towards the end of the video Ralf uses Symbols in area as well as the standard forest drawing tools.
Create a "grouping" of trees - that you copy and paste in some of the open areas you just created and at the edges (dont forget to rotate and resize as you place)
Fill in the rest of the deleted areas with hills, grasslands, burnt areas, etc.
After much testing, I didn't like any of the massive tree effects, even though I tested a variety of them... so... I manually put them one by one into a real ZEN state of soul and a machine gun tree with the mouse.
An amazing job. I use symbols in area a lot, to prevent this - here are my sparse, medium and dense forests using Darklands trees as requested by my client - I wonder if you could have done the same?

That's how I do all my forests, Ricko. Great job, really great job.
The map looks awesome! I'd like to congratulate you on another excellent map.
I'm not sure whether you should be committed to an asylum or canonised as a saint (of patience) for placing all these trees by hand!
Regardless, bravo!

Looks great! You do a great job of combining illustration and mapping!
The clouds (or smoke?) are great! Are they from a symbol set or did you use a different technique?
